good HoS game. well, it becomes more and more difficult to rate this kind of game and to not sound like a hanging cd or lp because it's about the 10the game from this company.
so i try to keep it short.
- liked the location, scenes and sounds
- nice and interesting story
- average to easy mini-games & puzzles
- about 5 hrs gameplay (by myself) to complete it
some bugs & (minor) personal cons:
- imho the default music volume is too loud (in compare to the sound effects) - but it can easily by adjusted in the menu
- in 1 or 2 occasions your character already "know" the name of the people although not possible when you click the items/clues in the game in the "wrong order"
- some "ugly" translation errors for the german language*
(imho) these minor cons don't affect the game at all so i recommend it.
again, a nice game from artifex mundi.
* wrong german translations [possible spoiler]

-- trunk (of the car) translated as "Stamm" (which is the trunk of a tree)
-- grief (character name) translated as "Trauer" (which is grief in the form of "to be sad" e.g. if a good friend died)
-- straight (poker expresssion) translated as "gerade" (which means straight (ahead)). First off let me say, I'm a huge fan of hidden object games. Love them!! But this one...I don't know. I CANNOT stand the voices. They are so monotone and boring. Seriously, I'm falling asleep playing this game that I had to stop playing for the time being.
Besides the puzzles, music and storyline, the voices are equally as important in games like this. It's what sets the tone and mood of it immersing players into the world. But in this game, it's almost like listening to some kind of robotic voice with no emotions.
Please redo the voices in this. It's what breaks this game, otherwise I would give it a thumbs up.. This is a very short HOG. The story....its fun. I mean there is this killer and you are his prisoner every few minutes.
Anyway, as most HOGs have a silly story it doesn't matter.
So what about the gameplay? Its very very easy. A few times there is a little confusion because of missspelled objects, but
most pictures have so few objects that you shouldn't have a problem with it.
Could I recommend it? Not for the asked price. If you can get it for 1 - 2 € buy it.. Crime Secrets was my first go at a HOG. It has beautiful scenery and a plot with lots of deaths to keep things interesting. The puzzles are fairly straightforward, except for some translation / spelling errors which can be a touch frustrating during hidden object scenes. For example, looking forever for a bowl, only to realize that it was a bow you needed all along. Thank you Youtube!
The game is very relaxing as you play through a B-Movie sort of story. There are typical B-movie issues, like why does the killer not kill you instead of continually disabling you?
All told, I enjoyed this game and will be playing more HOGs! They're like point-and-click games without all the insipid walking, and prettier puzzles.. I play a lot of HO games when I'm not in the mood for a 30-hour RPG or the intensity of a first person shooter, but this game makes me wish I put that time into one of those other types of games. Don't get me wrong. I've played worse HO games than this; but for me the negatives outweigh the positives.
The art is up to the normal standards for HO games, which is fine, although the animations - particularly the facial animations - border on creepy. The puzzles are relatively easy, which is welcome considering that some puzzles in HO games can be rage-inducing. And you can get all achievements in one play-through if that's important to you. There are a few sections that are basically a reverse HO where you have to "investigate" a crime scene and find the locations of interest without knowing what those are, which is an intersting change of pace.
However, the story and premise are laughably bad even for an HO game, and that's saying something. Characters are uninteresting and have no depth at all. And the voice acting.... oh, dear god. "Ear bleeding" might describe how bad it is. Mute the audio for your own sake. And some of the items during the HO segments are misspelled for that item but are still legitimate words, which obviously is really frustrating.
Again, I actually have played a few HO games that are worse than this (but not by much); however, there are a LOT of HO games that are significantly better. Spend your time and money on those.. Great HOG with a good engine, hilariously awful plot and writing, and relatively simple puzzles. Took me about two hours to play through this game and you can actually enjoy the story without being bogged down by unnecessary things.
. Crime Secrets: Crimson Lily is an exceptionally good hidden object adventure game made by One More Level and is very similar to the 9 Clues series (the developers might be the same just working under a different name) where the player has to investigate crime scenes and gather clues to figure out solve a serial murder case. I'm quite surprised by the mixed ratings the game has currently, since the quality of the plot exceeds other HOGs and its serious tone (several people get killed) is quite uncommon in the genre.
When the usual female detective (the protagonist in most Artifex Mundi games) goes on a vacation to a beautiful snowy mountain resort to relax, she suffers a car accident. By following the police officer, who was also present at the crash and reaching the hotel eventually, she must use all her wits (and sixth sense) to track down a serial killer and uncover a case, in which many of the locals seem to be involved.
The game's unique feature is the segments where we have to search for clues at the crime scene and arrange them in chronological order to reconstruct an event (a murder most of the time), that happened there. It then replays before our eyes and helps us locating another clue, evidence or useful item, that'll get us one step closer to finding out the identity of the murderer (there'll be a twist, even if we have suspicions about who he is).
There's a variety of puzzles providing enough challenge and the hidden object scenes aren't overused (which is a good thing). The charm of the game lies in its story and the wonderful scenery it takes place in: the beautiful snow-covered mountain landscape, the vivid coloured interior of the antique hotel are all great to look at. The chilly wind blowing improves the already perfect atmosphere further. The attention to the little details is also something to be appraised: we find little notes and photos, recordings that link the participants together and our diary proves to be handy (besides being interesting to read) as well. There are collectibles in the form of snowflakes and origamis that can be fairly easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled.
As for problems I could mention some strange/illogical item uses (the occasion for example where we have to use a shovel to pull something off a shelf, or cut a pillow open to burn the stuffing) plus the strange appearance of angel statues made of ice and traps towards the ending. I also encountered a description error where a hula dancer doll's flower necklace was wrongfully described as a 'fishing rod' (I did have to use it as a fishing rod though, so as a hint it was pretty good ;))
As mentioned before I was completely satisfied with the graphical presentation: it is as beautiful as a HOG should be with excellent scenery. I really liked the artwork, it has a classic stylized feel about it, at the expense of realism a bit. The suspenseful music and the superb environmental sounds with the wind blowing and wolf howling (yes there are wolves as well) are truly impressive. The voice actress, Amy Robinson did a very good job providing her voice to our detective.
I was absolutely fascinated with Crime Secrets: Crimson Lily and I would recommend it to everyone, even to players who normally don't play casual adventure games. The story and the wonderful landscape both make it a memorable, outstanding (for me, one of the best) example of its genre. It is one of those rare HOGs which I'd definitely play through again in time.
PROS
+ amazing, atmospheric locations
+ exciting plot with twists
+ crime scene investigation and reconstruction
+ a good variety of puzzles
+ great sound effects, voiceover and music
CONS
- some illogical item uses
- a bit surreal towards the end (ice angels?)
RATING
8.5/10
(Special thanks to talgaby for the game). For me, the overall negatives of this game outweigh the positives, but your mileage may vary.
Cons:
- My main criticism is that the game is extraordinarily easy, to the point it has almost no challenge even on the hardest difficulty aside from the bonus collection items. Even casual games should have some semblance of brainteasing, but I personally found the main gameplay in Crimson Lily boring and disengaging. This is the 78th HOG I've played, and it consistently had the easiest puzzles out of all of them.
-Although the game does contain a decent variety of puzzle and minigame types - HOS, detective scenes, tile sliding, tile rotation, memory challenges, sequencing challenges, rope puzzles, object use puzzles, etc., there wasn't anything I haven't already done ad nauseam (and done better) in other games. This feels like a generic rehash of genre tropes (ex."Oh look, a key is stuck in a door and I have a sheet of paper...")
- Many of the minigames are not colorblind friendly, so if that is a concern for you I would definitely skip this title.
- A few of the HOS have multiple items that fit a given word clue, such as having two different types of razors in the same puzzle. Not a huge deal, even when playing with the highest click penalty, but it's one of my personal pet peeves.
- While the overall plot ended up being more cohesive than usual for the genre, certain developments, dialogue, and puzzle solutions along the way had me shaking my head and rolling my eyes. There were many exclamations of "really?" and "that's not how that works..." while playing.
I think because this is a more realistic detective story without the usual trappings of supernatural elements, steampunk Victoriana, or exploitative exoticism, any time it didn't conform to realistic expectations felt that much more jarring.
- The journal only shows your objectives and the handful of photos you collect, and does not have any recaps, notes, or additional insight into the story itself.
- The voice actors themselves aren't terrible, but it's clear they were doing blind readings of their lines with no context or direction as to where to put the right emphasis or inflection. The line "Who, David?" is one glaring example of this, since the wrong word was clearly stressed. There are also a few grammatical errors in the translation, which got incorporated verbatim into the voice acting to almost comedic effect, such as when the poshest character in the game blurts out a highly-enunciated "What we gonna do about it?"
- The translation errors continue into the hidden object word clues, with a globus cruciger labeled as a "golden apple" and a motorcycle helmet labeled as "helmet motor." Honestly, though, I've seen much, much worse; this wasn't enough of a problem to impact gameplay.
- There are some glitches with the bonus collection items, especially towards the end of the game - the last several snowflakes and origami animals did not disappear once clicked on, even though the game registered them as found. I also noticed a few times where the snowflake collection item graphic was used as general non-clickable background decoration, such as on the salt bag and in two different HOS.
- I don't really have any complaints about the overall graphic design or aesthetics, but the cutscenes were a bit blurry and pixelated at times.
Pros:
- I did not play on easy, but I saw from the selection screen that the game does have a built-in map feature showing where actions are still available, so if you are the type of player who finds the adventure elements frustrating in these types of games you might find that helpful.
- Unlike other HOGs which make you constantly re-find multiple copies of the same tool (seriously, how many tweezers, hammers, and pickaxes does the average human really just have laying around?), this game has you hold onto each tool in your inventory until you have done absolutely everything you can with it. It's a small nicety, but one I appreciate.
- The biggest plus of this game is that it lets you replay the story as many times as you want with the same profile, and saves your achievement progress across replays. That means if, like me, you only missed one origami animal on your first playthrough, but collected literally everything else, you can simply jump right back in and focus on looking for that final item for 100% completion. (The rest of the collection items will still reappear in the game, but once you collect the one you need you will immediately get the achievement.) This may seem like a no-brainer, but I can't tell you how many HOGs have a "one play per profile" limitation, coupled with an "unlock all achievements" achievement, forcing you to start from absolute zero if you miss anything.

Agents!
Today we have a top secret, exciting message from our on headquarters! When we first announced Irony Curtain, we promised – no elevator music! That’s why we have established a Matryoshkan collaboration with an extremely esteemed, experienced agent: Peter McConnell.
All fans of classic point and clicks will recognize that name – such hits as the Grim Fandango or Monkey Island series would not be complete without the splendid soundtracks that enhanced the adventures of the wacky, weird heroes. The enormously successful composer collaborated with Arkadiusz Reikowski - best known for his work on Layers of Fear, Kholat and AM’s My Brother Rabbit - on the OST to Irony Curtain, which resulted in an larger-than-life Original Soundtrack. Peter created the Main Theme, which inspired Arkadiusz's further work on the OST - the effect of their endavors is available on Soundcloud[soundcloud.com] and Bandcamp[arkadiuszreikowski.bandcamp.com] as we speak!
Irony Curtain from Matryoshka with Love is the satirical, classic p’n’c adventure about espionage and a bizarre, communist Matryoshka, full of no-nonsense riddles, politically incorrect jokes and vivid, intense characters you’ll be dying to meet.
