THIS. GAME.. There aren't a lot of (non-weeb) rhythm games for PC, but so far this one is one of the best I've played this year. I would love to see Spotify support.. Double Kick Heroes is an overly repetitive title that seems like it could work, but it fails. The game tries to mask these issues with a surplus of intricate details, yet this doesn't really work. Double Kick Heroes follows a metal band that just finished a secluded six month training session only to be introduced to a zombie-infested world. Following the flow of chaos, they transformed their Cadillac into a Gundillac and proceed to mow down zombies with headbanging tunes attached to guns on the back of their car. The game takes an entirely original idea and throws it into the genre of post-apocalyptic music rhythm. However, the execution doesn't live up to the concept. While the central idea is interesting and fresh, the overused trope of zombie apocalypse has become stale. Incorporating this into a heavy metal group that wants to save the remnants of the human race is praiseworthy, but quickly torn down by repetitive metal, thrash, black, and other types of music. Even with the different styles, nothing made a large impact for the music to be distinguishable from the rest. When playing at one of the five difficulties, more or less is added or subtracted from the base rhythm game. In order to mix things up, up and down movement is thrown into the mix along with another button to keep the beat of the original style. This game was intended to be ostentatious, but an inability to concentrate on rhythm, notes, and the direction enemies are coming makes for a problematic playthrough. With repetitive music, tedious level design, and a difficulty scale ranging from laughably easy to ridiculously hard, nothing makes the player want to continue the game. Though the story is overused and simply cliche, it features some witty dialogue and colorful language that really give each character their unique feel. Not all of them are pure metalheads whose only goal in life is to rock out. The story even deepens each character as it continues, connecting them to the player instead of just simply going into Arcade mode and annihilating zombies. The zombies and visual design also bring something to the table for Double Kick Heroes. The Zombies and the bosses offer an interesting variety and uniqueness. With no shortage of ideas for zombies, we see things like undead babies and zombie vultures. The boss fights were challenging and engaging enough that those levels are worth another go just for the joy of defeating a dinosaur or shark zombie. The game follows a linear storyline, flowing without issue. Even when the plot takes you to places such as the desert, you will see vulture zombies; in places like the city, youll see zombies on motorcycles. The use of pixel graphics, painted backgrounds, and detailed map work brings life to the game. Characters are never at a standstill, each having their animation and musical instrument playing during the raids. They exhibit different animations while at safe houses, making the world feel more amiable. The bright colors and pixel graphics fall into place with the post-apocalyptic world that the protagonists find themselves in. The map is easy to navigate and understand, but constant return trips to safe houses for information on missions becomes a nuisance. The map also features roads and places that cannot be traveled, but seem to be accessible at some point later in the game. Once reaching the end, there is a road signed work in progress and hints that the game is not over, or at least that there's more content to come. Looking into the achievements and badge cards on Steam, some characters haven't been introduced yet. The game seems to have plans to release more content. Double Kick Heroes offers an arcade mode on top of their story and even a level editor mode that lets you pick zombies, the background, and add music. This allows the player to not have to only play the provided metal, but any music that you have already downloaded onto your computer. Double Kick Heroes has potential, but it stumbles due to its repetitive nature. However, with more to come, it could change that design. For now, it wallows in its misgivings and there's nothing that makes the game worth playing for long. virtualhaven.org. Double Kick Heroes is the shmup that made me wish I had better rhythm. The gameplay boils down to the same well-timed button presses youd usually see in a rhyhtm game but there are enough touches to make this feel like more than a music game with a shmup skin. Lining up your shot is a challenge in itself you have to steer your car up and down and the button presses correspond with weapons that are placed in different locations on the car. There is enough variety in enemy design, so far, that you have to account for whats happening on the shmup half of the screen while staying on beat. The big selling point for me has been the presentation. In addition to the attractive pixel art, I love the world thats been built around the in-game music. Each track has fun metadata like the song titled SURPRISE! YOURE UNDEAD! with a genre of Mikes Delight Rock. Some of my favorite genre names were: Beach metal, Tenacious Rock and Y2kore. Elmobo appears to be the composer of Double Kicks soundtrack and it sure is excellent. Through my research, I learned he worked on the Nightmare Creatures OST which was also impressive. Definitely check out Double Kick Heroes for a fun, well polished experience. Its still in Early Access but theres about 4 hours worth of content and the different difficulty levels will keep you coming back. Hoo boy, where do I start. Okay, so, this literally has to be one of the best rhythm games I've ever played, or one of the most fun ones at any rate. It starts off as one of your typical rhythm games, hitting a note at the right time to score points, but with a twist; your bass-pedal notes actually fire off bullets at zombies chasing you down a road, from two different spots. The better you play, the higher your multiplier will go, and the stronger your bullets will become (i.e. Start off with a pistol, upgrade to a shotgun, and then to cannons), though depending on what difficulty you're on, messing up will reset your multiplier and revert you back to pistol bullets. Anywho, that's the basic gameplay of it, but going further down the difficulty line introduces multiple tracks with different triggers, for example, playing on Metal difficulty, a few songs down, you're not just hitting the bass pedal notes, you're hitting the snare drum notes as well in order to 'charge up' hand grenades, although missing these notes isn't as punishing as missing the bass pedals. Going even further down the difficulty will introduce cymbals as well, so you'll actually feel like you're a heavy-metal drummer, but be warned, as this game can get EXTREMELY difficult if you're not paying attention to everything, and it's very easy to get overwhelmed on the higher difficulties. The music itself is friggen amazing; ESPECIALLY if you love metal If you don't, then why are you even here? , and it includes multiple different sub-genres. You start off with some rock tracks (with some low-key, very satisfying chiptune noises during some parts, complimenting the pixelated graphics), then slowly progress to the heavier songs/genres, and playing along with the rhythm of these songs is extremely satisfying. You can also mess with some of the 'hit sounds' should you desire. There are also boss battles in this game, ranging from a giant shark mini-boss, to a giant monstrosity (I'm not going to spoil anything, you need to see it for yourself), which involves steering up and down the screen to dodge their attacks, resulting in an interesting battle overall, though I've seen speculation that steering up and down may eventually be removed (It's difficult as-is playing the game on its own, so when you have to hit notes and dodge attacks at the same time, once again, it can become very overwhelming). Because it's early access, there isn't -too- much stuff to do, but for the current price, I'd say it's definitely worth it, especially with the higher difficulties adding multiple tracks, so if you manage to master a song, try playing it under a harder difficulty to keep yourself further entertained. More tracks and story will be added later, as well as the option for custom songs (There are some right now, but you just need to supply the audio file). 9/10, definitely one of the best rhythm games out there, give it a shot.. Do you like games with zombies, metal music and guns? And also plot? Try Double Kick Heroes! A unique intersect between shmups and rhythm games, I had the chance to try the game out and pick up a key at PAX East 2018. Let me say first that as someone who is passible at shmups and awful at music games, I appreciate that DKH has a range of difficulty options. And also fun artwork and character dialogue. I already prefer it to games like Guitar Hero for that reason alone. The music's pretty good too. The titular metal band are about to put on a show in Los Angeles when they discover that their audience as gotten a bit ripe. Fleeing in their "Gundillac," Shiela, the gang begin a headbanging tour across the US in search of supplies and eventually, the truth behind the end of the world. They tell you up front that the game is better played with an arcade stick or guitar type controller, but lacking either I have been forced to make do with a keyboard. It works, but I get the sense I'm at a disadvantage. Based on what I've seen, Double Kick Heroes is a fun time and could over a significant challenge if you're looking for that sort of thing.
