In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.
Iron Sky isn't perfect, but it's hilarious and will leave you laughing and watching the whole way through. It's so great to see a 21st century film that isn't bad! To be honest when I first saw the plot I thought Iron Sky would be pretty dumb. Nazis invading the world in 2018? Well, I stand corrected!

James Washington, an astronaut and black model, is held hostage when he lands on the moon... by Nazis! Yup, that's quite a story; towards the end of the war in the 1940's, Nazis went to the "dark side of the moon" with a sinister plot to bring their new world order to North America! It can't be denied that the Nazis aren't exactly peaceful guys, but James befriends one of them, Renate Richter, who is a teacher and destined to marry someone she really doesn't like. After landing on the earth, Renate starts falling for James. Meanwhile, the top politicians of the United States have some pretty corrupt plans of their own. What does this mean for society? Well, things definitely escalate to something totally unexpected!

What can I say, this was a great movie! I loved the song in the ending credits, and the acting was amazing. It was great that Renate wasn't the "poor, defenseless woman", that she was a character who was resourceful and intelligent. The hanging lamp salute scene, hilarious! It has some swearing and sexual references/scenes, so I wouldn't recommend it to children, but these minor annoying words don't take away from the movie. The Nazis decide to bleach James' skin to make him appear white, but towards the movie's end it goes away and Renate, overjoyed that her friend is alive, tell him, "And you are the way you're meant to be". It's a really great scene.

I highly recommend Iron Sky, it's entertaining and thrilling the whole way through. It's one of the best films I've seen since I discovered "The Great Global Warming Swindle"! It deserves 10/10 stars. This movie is so tongue in cheek that it forces you to laugh.

I find it difficult to believe that some of the other reviewers seemed to want to try and make this into some kind of action film as evidenced from their negative reviews.

All of the characters were over the top with their portrayals and if you honestly think that they were portraying real Americans, Germans, Indians, Brits or any other nation accurately, you need a reality check.

Special effects were excellent and even the model makers went overboard with some of their homages to 1940's technology. The only reason I dropped a point from this movie being a 10 is because they should have created the Nazi saucer from the blueprints of the one they supposedly were really trying to create.

The final battle scenes were out of this world (literally) and were a lot of fun to see including the scene where the Japanese spaceship pulled a kamikaze move on the U.S. spaceship.

Only if you buy into the conspiracy theory that WW II Nazis created some kind of secret base in Antarctica or on the dark side of the moon should you avoid this film, otherwise, see it and enjoy it for what it is, a fantastic satire.
Jarmo Puskala came up with the idea for the film whilst in the sauna. The filmmakers also provided the opportunity for collaboration from fans. People could ask for a screening in their home town, help collaborate in the film's creation, and invest in the movie. 10% of the film's budget was generated by fans. However, the idea of Nazis secretly on the Moon goes at least as far back as Robert Heinlein's novel "Rocket Ship Galileo" published in 1947. The Finnish director Timo Vuorensola was under a lot of time pressure and completed the theatrical version only 48 hours ahead of the deadline for the Berlinale festival. Unfortunately, that meant that numerous scenes were not yet finished and couldn't be integrated into the movie. The now released Director's Cut, which is also marketed as Dictator's Cut, is not only much longer than the theatrical version but also the better film. It makes the film seem more complete, adds more depth to story and characters, has more battle scenes and some improved effect shots. That should satisfy fans. The director himself described it this way: "With the Director's Cut, I was able to bring in many of the scenes I really enjoyed and now are prepared in full quality. The film is now almost 20 minutes longer, and much more epic in pacing, and finally in the form I originally wanted it to be."
