About This Game

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is an action rogue-lite with RPG elements. You explore randomly generated levels based in H.P. Lovecraft stories, fighting cultists and all kinds of monsters from the Mythos, improving your weapons and gear, solving puzzles and challenges, and looking for clues and knowledge to defeat the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods.

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. You will experience first-hand the cosmic horror created by the genius of Providence. Every character will go through an investigation that will take them through different locations, from the creepy old Victorian mansion to the abandoned hospital where forbidden experiments take place or the jungle where lost tribes celebrate forgotten rituals, just to name a few. Levels are randomly generated: it will be a different experience every time you play. Also, they vary depending on the character you’re playing with. Look for items and clues to unlock secrets and new stories!

5 CHARACTERS, 5 WAYS OF FIGHTING THE MYTHOS




You can play as 5 different characters, each with a different playstyle and storyline. A private detective, a witch, a thief, a professor, and even a ghoul—each with different stats, weapons, and combat moves, creating five entirely different gameplay experiences. The Detective offers a balanced playstyle, with average Health and Stamina. The Professor is a specialist in ranged combat, with less Health and a special shield granted by his weapon, the Tillinghast. The Witch does a lot of damage, has teleport abilities and elemental shields of fire and ice, but also a very low Health. The Thief is a specialist in melée combat that takes advantage of its stealth to maximize her damage. The ghoul does a lot of melée damage, has a high Health and regenerates itself, but can’t use medkits at all.

The truth of the dark horrors that inhabit the universe is unbearable for any human mind. In the end, you can’t win against the Old Ones. Madness or death await you. But maybe you can delay the inevitable… If you face the Great Old Ones without any knowledge about them, you will go mad just by looking at their hideous features. But spread across every level you will find special items with information about the Great Old Ones. The more you know about them, the stronger your mind shall become – but knowledge is not easy to find, and if you are not thorough in your investigation you might get to the end of a storyline without finding everything that is to know. You will have to play with all the characters if you want to find all the information about every Great Old One!

MADNESS AWAITS




Insanity crawls behind every corner for those who face the Mythos. In your investigations, you will face different situations where you have to choose what to do – make the wrong decision and you will start losing your mind. In order to face the Great Old Ones, you need knowledge, and to find it you have to explore – but the more you explore the more events that shake your sanity you will find… Those who go mad under the influence of the Mythos take their own life to escape the eternal terror they are now looking at. Not all hope is lost, though – there are some ways to recover your sanity…

Sure, it's a nice little action two-sticker.
But let's all stop pretending it's more than that, and for the love of HP, stop calling it "Lovecraftesque" or what have you.
"Lovecraft" doesn't mean tentacles, and it sure doesn't mean hordes of skeletons chasing after you so you can put them down with your shotgun.
This game would have been served much better with a generic background story. Would've attracted less people who love their "Lovecraft", though (tentacles and madness).
Hope this game improves during EA.. This game it's so disappointing. Honestly love Lovecraft, but this is terrible. Need many fixes, it's way too unfair and story it's not even interesting...I was expecting something hard but good, but no, it's all about tentacles and not giving you any healing item if you die, so good luck with the boss.

















. Very good game, I love lovecrafts work, and this game made me super excited to play! There are some bugs here and there, but it's overall been a very nice experience! It gives me a good challenge that ive been craving for ages, it's completely fair from what I've seen... aside from the MASSIVE collision box on floor hazards such as fire and puddles, but the biggest downside is, as of typing this out, I've hit the temp end of a characters story and have to wait a little for the next content release! This shouldn't be a problem in the future though... pick this game up! 9/10 in my book, very excited to see this game grow. Dead, yet dreaming. Cthulhu wait in his palace in R'lyeh.. I love this game for obvious reasons!. It looks, smells and tastes 100% HP Lovecraft! You nailed it. Like an action Mansions of Madness game in glorious pixel Graphics. The settings are eerie and wonderful and combined with the Music it creates a haunting atmosphere. The feeling that Death awaits you behind every door. 10 /10

Things to fix
- some balancing issues vs room full of enemies very early. Little to much chaos.

. This is easily one of the best games I have played in quite some time. It has a surprising amount of depth to it, with various mission objectives per chapter, secret rooms you can find and a few puzzles here and there.
Combat is quick and straight-forward. Item management isn't a chore and the items are actually useful enough to not be a waste of space. Enemies are fairly simple, but are well in keeping with the Mythos. Your choices concerning weapons and items can make difficult battles, easy or vice versa.
Story elements exist and while simple, are fairly engaging. The levels themselves are randomly generated per play-through, and feature an appropriate and satisfying aesthetic. The use of insanity in this game is one of the simplest I have yet seen, but also the most effective.
I have not yet beaten the game, but it has made me want to see the game through. Mythos games aren't easy to make well. The very nature of the genre makes it difficult to translate into games. But Untold Stories does a really good job, considering what it is. I would actually say that it is a better, more engaging, and fun to play, Lovecraftian game than some considerably more expensive titles out there. If you are into Lovecraft with a bit of action, you should definitely give Untold Stories a shot.. Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is an intriguing pixel art adventure and arpg EA game that lets you play the role of an investigator while exploring randomized levels and fighting off creatures based on the Cthulhu mythos. The combined music and sound effects really compliments the forbodeing atmospheric vibe of this game. While I am playing this with my Xbox one controller at the moment, I would also like to have an option using a mouse to aim with, as opposed to just playing with the keyboard alone. Another other gripe is the unbalanced difficulty. Upon entering any unexplored room, you may be walking into a mob of fast moving cultists/creatures ready to attack you which will then lead to your demise really really quick, unless of course you are either extremely lucky, or have really good reflexes to roll your investigator to a safe distance; get behind an object out of their line of site to heal and shoot back in time before you get utterly murdered. It would be nice if there was an option to not have to start from the beginning of the level each time your player dies. What I did notice as I was interacting with certain objects were the choices given to your investigator as to how you would like to go about exploring the object or leaving it alone. Some poor choices will lower your investigators sanity, and although I didn’t notice any noticeable mental afflictions or insanity to my character off-hand, I suppose this is the start of the sanity system being developed into the gameplay by the devs. It would be even more worthwhile if the devs could implement a sanity effects system along the lines of say Eternal Darkness for the Nintendo GC. As much as I enjoy it already, this early access game has much potential to become even better with future updates.. Love the Game. As fan of Lovecraft and the Call of Cthulhu RPG this is right up my alley. Just wish I could generate my own character. Other then that great game. Dear investigators,
The new version 1.1 comes with a lot of fixes, new content, and surprises. Take a good look at the patch notes:

  • We have improved the shooting system in the game.

  • Balance improved: We have improved the balance of the Professor up to the Library location. We have reduced the stamina cost of the Explosive shot, but we have increased its delay.

  • New enemies and traps: We have added new traps and enemies in the Professor's cemetery level and other locations.

  • New animations and visual elements: Now the plants in the game react when you run through them.

  • New items: We have added items that give immunity to certain effects like Bleeding, Stun, Traumas, etc...

  • New sound effects: We have added sound effects to certain consumable objects.

  • Quest fixed: We have fixed the quest of the mother & child in the Detective's Pogost.

  • Necronomicon: Now you can find in the levels of the game, and in the shops, different copies of the Necronomicon. Use them wisely and they may grant you valuable objects, access to a secret location, or a certain and terrible death.

  • Eye of Azathoth: Fixed the issue that hides the map if you use two Eyes of Azathoth in the same location.

  • Night hunter: Fixed the problem with the Night hunter in the Professor's Cemetery, that appeared frozen if you had already saved the Witch previously.

As you can see, we continue as hard as ever improving, fixing, and adding new things to our game. Please continue being as awesome, and inform us of any issue that you find. We promise to continue giving you all as much support as possible and improving our game.

Dear investigators, we have published a quick hotfix to solve the following issues:

  • Thief's Stealth: We have fixed the issue on which Stealth didn´t work if used upon entering a room, and before the enemies reacted to your presence.

  • Thief's Stealth: We have fixed the issue on which some enemies followed the Thief, even on stealth. Now every enemy will wander randomly, looking for the character.

  • Scanning device: We have fixed the issue on which the checkpoints didn´t save the effects of the Azathoth's Eye, the chests already opened and the items left on the floor, upon restarting the level.

  • Visual effects: We have fixed the issue with some visual effects showing up fixed around the playable character.

Greetings, investigators,

Do not worry: we have performed the rituals to keep the dark forces at bay; there won’t be any unintended visitors today.

We’ve got good news for a change, and we wouldn’t want anyone interrupting. What could possibly constitute good news when we’re facing crawling horrors as ancient and powerful as the forces of creation? Nothing less than a new ally to fight them. We are aware that we can’t win for good – but maybe with her help we can postpone our defeat and forestall the plans of the Great Old Ones one more day…

Let us introduce you to the witch Elizabeth des Flèches. She was born in southern France, but her mother was wise enough to raise her in the old ways, following the ancient trails to the ruins of the Druidic temples. She learnt forgotten sorceries, and in her trances and visions she discovered the malignant creatures that threaten the very fabric of our world, always lurking our existence at the distance of a mere shadow.



In one of her sulfur-induced dreams, she saw sacred stone circles, now corrupted on the top of unknown mountains; stone pillars, silent guardians of the eternal sleep of the faithful, turned to dark purposes. And when she woke up, there were strange prints all around them, like the claws of monstrous birds, and a new power had been bestowed upon her: she could make lighting shoot from her fingertips; the elements played and danced for her, becoming her shield… and her sword.

The Witch is the third character available in Lovecraft’s Untold Stories. A fast-moving character, Elizabeth has an above-average knowledge of the Cthulhu Mythos thanks to her training as a sorcerer. She attacks from mid-range using his skull as a magic focus, as well as using the elements to create varied effects, defensive as well as offensive. The Witch joins the Detective and the Professor in a diverse ensemble of characters, each with a very different pace and gameplay features.

Our time is running out. Soon this place will not be safe. The Witch will contact you, investigators. For now, you must depart.

Just a quick announcement. We have finally released the new patch 1.045s. This one solves the following issues:

  • Shoggoths in the Ice City: We have solved the problems with the regular Shoggoths and the Big boss in this location.

  • Key reconfiguration: Now it is possible to use the keys Shift and Alt.

  • Gamepads: We continue working on this. For the moment, just those Gamepads under the standard Xinput will work correctly.

  • Visual issues: We have fixed some visual problems in the Ice City.

Dear investigators, we have announced already the official release of our game on January 31st, and we are more active than ever solving the last issues and improving the balance, and here we bring you one of the Early Access latest patches before 1.0.

Read the patch notes to know a bit more about what we have added and fixed!

NEW CONTENT:
  • The Scanning Device: We heard you gals & guys! We read the posts, and we can finally introduce the long-time expected Checkpoints! Now you will find in many locations of the game a special device that connects with the storage of the Strange Place. You can put objects that you don´t need, or that you want to keep, and the device also "saves" the character in that exact moment. If you die afterward, you will start from the Scanning Device, and not from the very beginning of the level!

    Be careful, though, because you can do this just once on each location, so choose the correct moment to do it.


FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Now you can properly hit the bottles that summon spirits from every position.

  • The Machines in the Ice City won´t generate monsters in blind spots.

  • The Headless major now has full health when facing it.

  • Now the encounter with the Black Pharaoh works as intended.

  • The Boss Castro in Innsmouth now works as intended.

  • Fixed several visual problems in the encounter with Nyarlathotep.

  • Fixed several places where the character could get out of the map.

  • The Sorcerer boss in the jungle of the Witch's storyline now works as intended.

  • The Zugi monsters now work as intended.

  • The hat of the Ghoul now provides the correct increase of light radius.

  • The encounter with Shub-Niggurath now works as intended.

  • The encounter with Azathoth now works as intended.

  • Thief: The Stealth has been improved. Now works almost as intended. Still remains the bug where enemies will see you, if you use Stealth right after entering a room, and before the enemies react. Until we fix this, we suggest you use Stealth before entering a new room.
