A neat little detective hacking game with some clever tricks and a decent story.
Pros:
1) The story is good. Interesting and constantly evolving with some fun characters in the background. There's also an interesting commentary about the Orwellian nightmare of massive agencies being able to see everyone's lives, but also a criticism of the power hungry anarchists that attempt to overthrow the status quo.
2) The artstyle is decent. It's not hard on the eyes at all!
3) The gameplay is charming. Essentially, you're tasked with hunting down cyber criminals. You do this by looking on websites, hacking them, and searching through files with potential leads and evidence to move forward. There's no hand holding and it allows you to look for the evidence yourself. Since you're limited to a small amount of information with details all over it, it means you have to think sometimes, but never get lost in piles of potential evidence!
Cons:
1) Some cases definitely felt anti-climactic. You just sort of... finish them with no real hurrah.
2) There were some points where it was a bit ambiguous what evidence they wanted for a criminal cause you would have multiple pieces that would seem valid.
3) My major complaint is that I feel this game didn't go far enough with it ideas. The hacking never strays too far from "Ping website's IP, hack IP, download files". As a result the game felt tedius at points. For a sequel I would highly recommend fleshing these mechanics out.
4) For some reason, the trading cards were never given to me which was odd.
All in all, a charming, if a bit simple at times, detective game with potential for future expansion!. I love this idea. I want this game to be interesting and entertaining. It isn't either.. This game was AMAZING! It keeps your interest and is engaging without leaving you completely in the dark. Got frustrated a couple of times trying to arrest people but it was worth the feeling of satisfaction when I got the right person. I also loved the humor, made for some comic relief without going over the top. One thing I would want to see improved would be saving where I pause the game rather than having to start over. Also got me thinking about privacy and safety in the real world. Thanks so much to the creators of this game, I loved it!. creative concept
- interesting storyline
- pixel style, PERFECT!!
- nice game and hope to have a new series :). This is a pretty decent, if short, adventure game. I paid $2.50 for it, and I sure got my money's worth. The early levels have multiple solutions: You can charge the same suspect, and sometimes different subjects, with a variety of crimes, and the meaner the better. This leads to hilarious situations, when you can choose to get a drug dealer for a few years, or hand 25 to someone for the most heinous crime in the game's dystopia: Unlicensed Software Development.
The worst part of the game is that it has more potential than it actually uses. Let me have conversations with the creepy receptionist, see more of the consequences of my actions, and improve the text interface a bit, and put as much effort in some of the late levels as in the early ones and this game could be pretty awesome. As it is, it's a sensible diversion.. Game seems like it would be cool but is way to buggy/broken. Some of the missions cannot be finished halting progress, don’t understand how games like this are released.. The game has a lot of charm and is overall a fun puzzle game with an interesting plot, but someties the specific answers it wants (ie. what files it wants) feel unintuitive. Pick it up for like three bucks and you probably won't regret it.. Lots of bugs
the interface often doesn't make sense. eg. logging into a bank account, at www.banksite.com you have to put www.banksite/accountnumber instead of www.banksite.com/accountnumber
the evidence you have to submit often doesn't make sense. eg. bank records that don't show any incriminating transactions or a text log with vague information instead of the actual hack file.
the suspects location that you have to submit often doesn't make sense. eg. in one case, everything says the suspect lives in one place but in the report you have to put his parents location to make the arrest.
one of the guides even has the correct but invalid (according to the game) location in the solution
there are multiple cases where you have evidence to make 3 different arrests but you can only choose one.
you can't go to websites using the IP, which you can in RL
you can't "iphack" using the URL instead of the IP, which you could if it was RL (IP and URL are the same thing eg. www.google.com = 172.217.25.174 you can ping either of these in CMD with the same result, and you can put either of these into a web browser and you get the same page)
you can't move the cursor in the text boxes to fix mistakes, you have to backspace all the way and retype
you cannot delete useless files after downloading them
you cannot save important files from one case to another
you cannot save the notepad or edit other than backspace, once you get to the last line of the notepad you are screwed because you cannot edit it or type anything else unless you backspace
you cannot save mid mission
the list goes on..... A really great game you can have a lot of fun with. I did figure out the "twist" in the end credits pretty early on, but, it was pretty enjoyable. Love the art style and music. I like that you can play each case 3 ways so it's harder or you can decide if you think someone should have an easier time of it.
Forgot to say there are some bugs like not being able to scroll using the UI's scrollbar so it's actually essential to have a wheeled mouse, at leasrt when I played it.
Also love the puns and random references to stuff.. It was a nice game, definitely entertaining. I had fun while it lasted and since I bought it in a sale, I feel like I can't really complain about anything.
However, there are a few things the dev could improve upon:
1. More eastereggs and a few hidden jokes, the game feels very streamlined and without much content besides the main narrative
2. Improvement of the last 2-3 cases, it feels a bit like they were finished in a hurry (the text of the professor to the mi7 contains a note to yourself - smth like date player did this and that instead of the actual date.
