Originally, I purchased this game as a pre-release. I think I paid $10 or $15. I played for a weekend or two until I couldn't go any longer. Then I forgot about the game. As I looked through my Steam games this week, I came across this title again to find out that it had an official release date. I checked it out again.
I can't find the words to express how in love with this game I am. If you like Stardew Valley, then you'll love this game. It's like that game, but in 3D and on steroids.. I am at a loss of words for this game, but I assure you it is worth the time and money. With any game there are pros and cons and, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons by a long shot. Some obvious pros would be the graphics, the immense selection of bachelors and bachelorettes, along with the casual and fun play style that I immediately fell in love with (even with the overload of quests). Even the music and sound effects I couldn't help but enjoy. From someone who ends up muting the majority of the games they play, that is a step in the right direction.
Now, the only real cons I have with the game are things with the story that I am sure they will add on to in time (They are making a DLC as well). They are even adding some dialogue and more "personality" to some of the other bachelor(ette)s that they seemed to ignore originally to flesh out the game. They are putting a lot of time and effort into this game and I enjoy seeing it improve. They are also taking into consideration what their audience would like to see (Children and even minor changes in the story are just some examples). Over all, this game is really fleshed out like it is and I enjoy coming back to it and even creating new save files to play it all again. There is so much to do and so much to enjoy.. I've been crashing a lot lately. I can't even finish a day. It's always at certain time of the day, suddenly the game crashed. I thought it was my computer when I left in on pause for some time, it didn't crash. I can't play this game anymore because it won't let me finish the day. I can't move on.. This game is honestly one of my all time favorite games. I've been in something of a slump lately regarding gaming, with even the games from my usual genres not exciting the way they used to. I'm not sure if it's me (I've been super busy and super stressed out) or if it's them (maybe the games I've been playing just aren't made in a way that I'm going to enjoy them), but either way it's been rough.
Enter "My Time At Portia." It's been massively addictive to me. I just keep going and going and going. Even when I hit a flaw (there's no counter on the fish tank, the quest system can be counter-intuitive), I still feel driven to keep going<\/i>. I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the building system, it's just so much fun.
A lot of people are comparing this to game to "Stardew Valley" and "Harvest Moon," and I'm not sure that's really correct. Certainly, some aspects are the same (relationship building, quests, etc), but the farming is incredibly limited. If you're looking for a farming simulator, this isn't it. If you're looking for a game where you explore and battle to find materials to craft new items and build relationships with interesting people, well, I'm having an awesome time.. the best time consuming game. Originally, I purchased this game as a pre-release. I think I paid $10 or $15. I played for a weekend or two until I couldn't go any longer. Then I forgot about the game. I can't find the words to express how in love with this game I am. If you like Stardew Valley, then you'll love this game. It's like that game, but in 3D and on steroids.. The game is fun and brings me peace after a long day. But this review is exclusively to voice a criticism that still bugs me to death. There is romance in this game, npcs that can be romanced who look like full grown adults. However the customization (at least of the male character) is extremely narrow. I am a full grown man but it feels so weird to try to create a masculine "manly" character and having to be satisfied with looking like a 13 year old boy when faced with dating a character like Phyllis. It makes Phyllis look like a pedophile. Even adding the only beard provided in customization leaves your character looking like just a 13 year old with a fake beard on. Not to mention you walk around the town and see these other male npcs (see Arlo) with broad shoulders and considerable height and masculine features relative to what we can have. They even get masculine adult facial features that can't be achieved in customization.
TL;DR: Game needs to add character customization that allows making a character that doesn't look juvenile. I'm an adult for heavens sake.. If you like Stardew Valley then you'll probably love it :D. So, this game has a few problems. Honestly it feels like it's still early access. It's kinda buggy, lots of clipping textures, a lot of items that don't do anything or aren't used for anything, a bunch of clearly unimplemented features, the combat is boring, and can mostly be done by spamming left click and occasionally dodging. It feels pretty sparse in terms of content, lots of frameworks for features and places for content to be, but not much actual content within. The voice acting isn't great, and is also inconsistent as to what is and isn't voiced, on occasion cutscenes and conversations will switch back and forth between voiced and unvoiced in the same scene. The game is generally unpolished, and somewhat frustrating at times. THAT BEING SAID..... This game is incredibly charming and fun, all the characters are interesting and enjoyable to interact with. I really look forward to what Pathea will do with the framework that they have put up, and the content that is sure to come in the next few months\/years. This game is very much worth the price tag, and more so if purchased on sale.
