The game - a masterpiece!. For a smooth playing experience of a similar game, go get Patrician IV. This hasn't aged well.. I like Ports Royale, I hope this will be the same or better, but I yust cant start to love it. decent.. but much better games out there.. Great game that will put you in the role of a trader, where you can be a simple trader or become the Alderman of the region.
The game offers you the possibility to trade the existing resources or create your own factories and be the one flowing the market with your production; be careful, though, stock can kill you.

You will end with a bunch of sheets of paper or style-sheet files to keep track of which city produces what, which cities consume what, or where to move production to keep it profitable.

You will see how the market changes as you are able to provide cities with products, how cities demand more by growing, how seasons change some of the demanded products; but keep happy the Prince or he will sack your cities along with pirates getting your ships or that lonely storm in the sea that can sink all your fleet.. its an interesting economic simulator, but feels rather clunky and dated today.

the visuals are lively, and the music adds tremendously to the atmosphere.

i gave up after playing the tutorial, but there's lots more to do, and i'm sure others will have played this game more than i did.. Deceptively simple,honestly brilliant.. Usually, old games on Steam only appeal to people who played them in their heyday. Not this one. I never owned this game back then, or any other Patrician, but I think it is amazing. I can't put it down.

The graphics are nothing special... they're OK, but the game has just the right balance of ease and complexity, the difficuly curve will give you setbacks, but not frustrate you, and the rules are easy enough to pick up, but hard to master.

I bought that bundle they're selling... the one that has the art game too? I haven't played the other games yet but Patrician III alone is worth that price.

By the way, if you're considering this or one of the 'The Guild' games, I'd get this. The Guild games have a lot of bugs but Patrician III is very smooth.. What a great game is Patrician 3! Even a decade later it stands up so well. The graphics are a little dated but still enjoyable and the game works so well, with nothing odd or ill fitting. There is plenty of interest such as expeditions, quests to become Alderman, becoming Mayor and building and protecting your city. Ships are limited to 4 types and are rendered nicely, even the battles work well and controls are easy to manage.

The trading can take a little time to figure out however the path to success is not complex: buy low and sell high. This means you have to learn prices and there are not too many to manage. Additional complexity can be found in gaining reputation and keeping your people happy, both requiring specific actions that you have to learn. When in doubt the forums are a wealth of information.

There is something very satisfying about plying the Baltic with you little ships, fighting off pirates (or becoming one!) and taking your original one or two vessels in a single small town to a trading empire spanning the region.

This game rewards patience and attention to detail. It is much better than Patrician 4 which was such a disappointment despite some promising new ideas. Like Port Royal 2, also from Ascaron, this game is essential for anyone not addicted to first person shooters, tired of alpha releases and chopping zombies.

I heartily recommend it.
