So, I have had this thought for a long time. Persona 5 is a game made for adults in which we the player don't really assume the role of a predefined character. Rather, we are given a male character that acts as a vessel for the players self. The main male protagonist is the player just as Link is the player. The protagonist is not a complete blank slate as we are given a backstory. However, we are given complete agency in the game to create relationships with whoever we want and create romantic relationships with a plethora of female characters but no males. Creating relationships, some romantic, is a core gameplay mechanic. The whole game revolves around the idea of a group of misfits coming together to form relationships despite the world casting them as outsiders. This is where the game becomes problematic however. You as the player are generally going to be an adult. The game is rated M and the general age demographic of whose played this from my own anecdotal experience are over the age of 20. You are given the option to romance a selection of female characters who have come to depend on you. The power dynamics of each of these relationships is that the male character in the end has power over the female character who depends on him in some regard. You are rewarded with romance for helping a girl. You can romance one or many female characters. In the end you can even have your own little harem. Alongside the questionable power dynamics is the point of this thread. The age of some of these characters you can date. Futuba is 15 Makoto is 17 Ann is 16 Chihaya is probably between 15 and 17 Haru is 17 Hifumi is probably between 16 and 17 Remember that you as an adult are inserted into the game to date these characters There are three adult characters you can romance Kawakami is your teacher who I romanced because I am also a degenerate Ohya the reporter Takemi the doctor The existence of the ability to date female children in a game in which the main male protagonist is a vessel for the adult player is problematic. This game promotes a disgusting way of viewing relationships in which it promotes the idea a man should have power over his female partner, that we are sexually rewarded for good deeds, and most importantly it promotes the sexualization of children. Edit: 75% of players are adults with 23% being over 30 This is a meta creepiness thing that is something else to think about. The relationships with Futaba and the adults were what creeped me out though as Joker is much younger than the adults and is a brother figure to Futaba. Most of the relationships feel creepy even before you think about the creepiness of video game relationships in general. The main character is the main character. It's a magic high school anime in game form. The main character has a canon name just look at the anime and is a high school student who can date other high school students or even adults. Game probably appeals to adults who didn't have a fun high school life though and get to act out being a sociable and desireable high schooler with Magic powers lol. Then it becomes this thing where Atlus was likely fairly sure after Persona 4 that the main consumers about this game would be 20 and 30 year olds in America and Europe. So then who is the main demographic if they have good knowledge of who will actually be buying the game? I still view the game as a game about teenagers though which is why I'm creeped about mostly by the Joker and older women romance options and the Joker-Futaba option. The Kawakami relationship is icky for a multitude of reasons but the fact that getting together with her unlocks the ability to order her over for a massage so that you can complete more activities in a day is really cringe. I didn't really pursue any of the teenage relationships for most of the reasons listed in the OP. The relationships you have that end in friendship and not romance are universally handled better from what I recall too. I can't think of a highly regarded game this gen that seems more primed for a future backlash than P5. Atlus didn't care about the Western consumers when they were developing Persona 5. They've said as much, and they also talked about how they were unsure about how the game would be received outside of Japan because of how Japanese centric it is. I mean, it should be pretty clear that the game is so intensely Japan focused and not designed to be relevant to the West at all.
