A beautiful heiress attempts to seek refuge in Nero Wolfe's house without revealing her identity or reasons for hiding. When she is turned away and found murdered shortly thereafter, Archie Goodwin takes off on his own to find the killer.
An anonymous young woman approaches Archie with the proposition that she be allowed to spend a week at the Wolfe complex incommunicado, and she is willing to pay well for the privilege. Taken by her beauty, the chivalrous Goodwin agrees to argue her case with Nero, who is characteristically angered to find a female tenant under his roof. The next morning, lawyer Perry Helmar tries to hire Wolfe to locate his missing ward, Priscilla Eads, who stands to inherit her father's factory and considerable fortune when she turns 25 in a week. Archie recognizes her picture as his young guest, but neither man reveals the truth to her guardian. When the young heiress cannot agree to terms with Wolfe, she leaves his protection and shortly thereafter is found bludgeoned and strangled. A guilt-ridden Archie looks for the murderer in the board room of the dead girl's company and is subsequently arrested for impersonating a policeman. Before Nero can free his friend and solve the crime, the killer strikes again.
I have enjoyed every episode of Nero Wolfe on A&E, but especially the two-parters which can qualify as full-length movies. Timothy Hutton is excellent as Archie Goodwin, and the supporting cast is outstanding. The idea of an ensemble or repertory company where many cast members play a different role in each movie or episode is first-rate, as is the quality of their performances. Prisoner's Base just seemed to me to be the most absorbing and involved of the movies and episodes which premiered during 2001, though I highly recommend each Nero Wolfe movie or episode if you enjoy mysteries, intelligent dialogue, superior acting and period pieces set in the 1940's and/or 1950's.
For the second straight episode, but even more so here, the A&E series creators have made the most of the limited runtime of 90 minutes to produce magic out of a book that I would not rank among the best in the Nero Wolfe series. There is an international version of _Prisoner's Base_ running over 96 minutes, but the scenes cut for the US TV version -- no matter how barbaric and "insupportable" the practice may be -- are immaterial. 90 minutes are not really conducive to transferring a master novel to the screen (big or small) -- given such short runtime, you can only butcher an original that is a masterpiece.

_Prisoner's Base_ the book is not a masterpiece; but I wouldn't hesitate to call the TV version one. It's first-rate both as a murder mystery and as a comedy -- which was exactly Rex Stout's forte: blending the two genres of mystery fiction and comedy into one coherent whole. The primary credit for the success of _Prisoner's Base_ must go to the screenwriters Lee Goldberg and William Rabkin. They were allowed to "pick and choose" in the book, so what we get to see here in 90 minutes, is pretty much a "Best Of" from among all the scenes and moments contained in the book; pretty much only the juiciest tidbits -- no wonder, then, that watching this episode is undiluted joy, unlike reading the book that can sometimes strike you as being too long! The pace of the TV episode is furious, if anything can be furious that involves the sedentary character of Nero Wolfe as the leading protagonist.

However, just as it happens with some of Rex Stout's finest books, so may be the case here with this TV episode, that the main star is actually Archie Goodwin, not Nero Wolfe. The tension and one might even say, the love-hate relationship between the two, is palpable from the very first minute to the last. The episode comes full circle and ends where it began, and there is nothing more satisfactory than that, for a Nero Wolfe fan: to behold the eternal, unchanging, ageless nature of Wolfean universe. How many things in life are as constant as this -- all the arrangements pertaining to the Brownstone household? Nero Wolfe is like the sun around which everything else must revolve and submit to its power -- no matter if insolent clients or employees, outside visitors, or police and city officers.

One of Rex Stout's chief triumphs is the emancipation of the Dr. Watson type of character. Can you imagine Dr. Watson flaunting Sherlock Holmes's instructions, or Captain Hastings rebelling against Hercule Poirot? No, sir. But that's pretty much all that Archie Goodwin does throughout _Prisoner's Base_. Goodwin is no lame puppet in Wolfe's hands; yes, Wolfe is all-powerful within his confines, but Goodwin, equally powerfully, asserts his independence, and convincingly shows Wolfe that he is capable of freeing himself from the limits imposed by Wolfe -- and that he really means it. Timothy Hutton gives a fabulous, nuanced performance here, and every sentence he says in this episode is delivered in just the right tone, with just the right facial expression. When he submits his resignation to the boss, you can see that this is no joke; he is genuinely hurt. Hutton displays the whole spectrum of Goodwin's character in _Prisoner's Base_: from being saucy and cocky as usual, to being human and compassionate and struck with remorse, to being just plain dead-tired and hungry (the memorable porcupine line). His interaction with the pitiful character expertly portrayed by Kari Matchett is among the highlights of _Prisoner's Base_, because it shows Goodwin constantly vacillating between the two poles of his personality (cocky versus compassionate) while dealing with Sarah Jaffee. This episode also shows Goodwin as a full-blooded action character: see his emergency invasion of Sarah Jaffee's apartment house, or his rescue effort in the episode's final scene. Wolfe, meanwhile, sparkles with his usual verbal acrobatics from start to finish, and each of the grimaces pulled by Maury Chaykin is spot-on.

The acting by the regular ensemble is uniformly perfect. Although I have some reservations as to the casting of several characters (R. D. Reid seems too old and thickset to me to play Sgt. Stebbins, and Conrad Dunn seems too polished to me to play Saul Panzer, not to mention the missing big nose) -- all actors are just phenomenal here, which notably includes the 6 suspects (James Tolkan frequently stealing the show simply by taking a nap at an inopportune moment). The attention given to even the seemingly most insignificant supporting cast members is admirable. A Nero Wolfe fan will rejoice at seeing some of the minor characters from the Wolfean universe come alive here. Bill MacDonald is a scream as Lietutenant Rowcliff, especially in the opening scene with him barging onto the stage. Hrant Alianak is great as the neighbourhood lawyer Nathaniel Parker: polished, refined and dignified as every lawyer should be, but he still manages to be funny to look at all at the same time. Robert Bockstael and Aron Tager, as the D. A. Bowen and Commissioner Skinner, only get a few minutes of on-screen time, but each of them manages to impress. Bill Smitrovich as Inspector Cramer is outstanding as usual. The police are another hero of _Prisoner's Base_, cooperating with Wolfe and Archie.

A curiosity: the closing credits of Part I actually give away the solution of the whodunnit. Perhaps the TV makers relied (justifiably or not) on not many viewers noticing the disclosure.

You can't go any higher than this in murder mystery fiction made-for-TV, and _Prisoner's Base_ must definitely be counted among the candidates for the best episode within A&E's TV series that was, sadly, cancelled after only 2 seasons.
one was enough. (then:) Does the door of the south room on the third floor have a bolt on the inside?

Archie: No. Why, do you think it should?

Priscilla: Maybe not, but I thought I'd feel better if it had. You see, that's where I want to sleep.

Archie: Oh, I see, really. That's where you ... huh. For how long?

Priscilla: For a week. Maybe a day or two more. I know how Nero Wolfe feels about women, so I knew I'd have to see you first.

Archie: You know, I like gags, and this is a real pip. Tell me, how does it go?

Priscilla: It's not a gag. For a certain reason, I had to be --

[The A&E version of the episode picks up with the remainder of Priscilla's line, after she sits down: "I had to go away."]

________

The second missing scene (30 seconds) follows Priscilla Eads' stalking out of the office, after refusing to pay Wolfe $10,000 to stay at the brownstone. In the south room, Priscilla quickly packs her bags. Archie stands in the doorway.

Archie: I wanted to say, you should watch your money, you know? You have plenty. Don't give it to a stranger to hold.

Priscilla: Sending little sister off to camp?

Archie: I'm not going to file the brand, number and the name of the taxi or anything like that. I'm not going to promise that I permanently forget your name. I may want to ask you something one day.

[Priscilla grabs her bags and heads for the door.]

Archie: So if I don't see you before the 26th, happy birthday. Here --

[Archie tries to help her with her bags, but Priscilla brushes past him.]

Priscilla: I've got it.

Archie: Okay.

[The A&E version of the episode picks up with Archie entering Wolfe's room the next morning: "Good morning. Fritz said you wanted to see me."]

________

In the office, after Priscilla Eads' fate is known, Archie tells Wolfe where their investigation should start. Wolfe refuses to start anything, since they have no client. Archie says, "Okay, I guess I knew how it would be. You realize that I have my personal problem. I put her back out on the street, I put her in the taxi that sent her home and now she got it." Archie prepares to leave. The third scene (one minute) missing from the A&E version continues with Wolfe's response.

Wolfe: Archie. No man can hold himself accountable for the results of his psychological defects, especially those he shares with all other men, such as lack of omniscience.

Archie: Well, I can get along without omniscience. What I can't get along with is knowing there's some damn strangler out there that's grateful to me for sending him his victim.

Wolfe: Bah.

Archie: No, that won't do. Well, I'll quit if you prefer -- yeah, I could do that. I'd prefer to take an indefinite leave of absence, starting now -- without pay, of course.

Wolfe: What are you saying? Are you saying you're going single-handed after the murderer of Miss Eads?

Archie: Single-handed, no. I might have to hire some outside help. But I'm going for him.

Wolfe: Pfui. Poppycock. Is Mr. Cramer such a bungler? And his men? So inept that you must assume their functions?

Archie: I'll be damned. That, from you?

[Archie gets a shoulder holster from his drawer and straps it on, then takes a Marley .32 and fills the cylinder.]

Wolfe: It won't do. I know what you're -- You're trying to coerce me, and it won't work.

[The A&E version of the episode picks up with the remainder of Wolfe's line: "I will not undertake a major and expensive operation, with no chance of income, merely because you have been piqued by circumstance."] Episode 13.109 movie in hindi hd free download
