About This Game

Once upon a time, the kingdom was a land of peace, harmony, and an all-consuming passion for the greatest sport - GOLF. Everyone in the land played day and night, and soon the kingdom itself was turned into the most beautiful course the world had ever seen. The land was happy. The land was good.

Until the monsters came...

In its obsession with golf, the people had become complacent, leaving the kingdom open to attack. Hole by hole, dungeon by dungeon, the monsters emerged and drove the people off the course. And a great sadness fell across the world.

Then one day, a brave girl appeared, determined to play the finest course in the world. Armed only with her golf club, she would set forth to play the nine legendary holes. But first, she would need to rid the land of the monsters...

Decided to have a go at it since it wasn't expensive. Disappointed. I found the actual "Golf" aspect of it to be far too easy, eagling 2 of the first 3 holes and birding the other. Where is my RPG in that? The RPG element was more of a Zelda style top down combat, but with horrible combat controls, moves which were all but impossible to avoid, and no simple way to block (you have to time your golf swing with their attack to block it, and there is no doding.

On top of all this the keys are mapped poorly, and there is no indication of which keys to use to even start the game. For future reference, use the arrow keys. Z = action or attack, X = magic or cancel, C = character screen, D = Map. I couldn't even start a new game without randomly hitting keys.

Wont be playing this game again after dying to the frog.. RPGolf is a game that embarks on the treacherous journey of combining together two completely unrelated genres and in my opinion it succeeds. In this case the genres are retro almost zelda-esque action RPG and 2D top down golf game. Both of these core elements function fairly well (although some of the hit boxes of the enemies seemed a bit misleading) and each provides a nice break from the other. These genres also merge surprisingly seamlessly with each other with the gameplay loop of make a stroke then get your to ball by fighting through enemies just feeling natural. To top things off RPGolf wraps the whole package with a healthy dose of charm. Overall while probably not the best golf game you can purchase nor the best action RPG it is nonetheless a very compelling package that ties together both of these genres in a manner whereby each genre complements the other very well.

I wasnt too familar with the rules of Golf before playing this but the Golfing is pretty simplistic. I liked the way the charcter stats affect your golf game. it plays like an action RPG. there are some secrets to be found I found a few of them but I suspect not all of them. I bought this for 1.50 USD during the summer sale and having played it Id happily pay more for it.. surprisingly fun. remember to save.
