About This Game

You don't need to have played the first Spaceman Sparkles game (it's terrible anyway) I'm pretty much just counting so I'll reach Sparkles 64 one day!


Spaceman Sparkles 2 is a frantic and groovy bullet-hell that takes place in a thumpin' disco universe. Calm your nerves with the sick beats by Aeroloid (and a chippy guest track by Death M.D.) in this painfully difficult shooter, you'll be begging for mercy while bobbing your head to the beat. Equipped with a rave gun, teleportation boots and giant hammers, you'll lead Sparkles through space and time to defeat mysterious beings of light, collect the 24 glowsticks of legend and retrieve his stolen throne in this grueling adventure.

I was able to run this piece of artwork on my acer aspire 1. specs dont get much lower than this (single core atom cpu at 1.66 Ghz, 1 gig of ram and intel GMA Graphics). First of all, graphics are mostly nice, but there is a lot of questionable decisions, like the fact that a lot of special effects obscures playing field and makes hard to tell things apart. Music is passable, but very repetitive.
Second, the controls. In fast-paced games such as racings or shooters they can make or break a game, and this game is broken. Seriously, who made a decision to place skills on numerical keys? Or make a character so slow? Or make game menu in such a way, that you can't just change a single key, you need to map everything from the scratch?
Third, levels are empty. I mean, there is nothing at all except occasional lump of pixels denoting an NPC or enemy and maybe a few "puzzle" elements, and that's it. Plus, what's the point in making a large level, if most of it is lava/water instadeath floor anyway?
And finaly, this game, fundamentaly, is not hard. It's just cheap. Making boss arenas such small that boss takes 1/4 of it is cheap. Making teleport the only thing you'll upgrade regurally as rest of skills caps out on the first-second upgrade is cheap. Making grand empty areas just to pad the playing time is cheap.
In essence, I'm not recommending this at all. Not even on sale, not even for trading cards, not at all.. Pretty good game once you get the hang of it. It might get you\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665from dying a lot but once you get the upgrades and new abilities it gets more intense and fun at the same time. Definitely worth checking out.. its really great but dear god make the third boss not so hard...its really too much it alsmots makes me not want to play after 2 hours of hitting the same boos and dying 446 times. Pretty good game once you get the hang of it. This is as though Dark Souls went to school and was a ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥♥. This is as though you're crashing into a wall of unpaid student loans and diamonds. This is a ♥♥♥♥ing great game, but I cannot handle it.. This game is meant to played angry in order to really play this game. If your not angry, you miss out on truly feeling the sick and amazingly crafted beats! This game is a blessing and I cannot wait to see a third game for this series.

Oh and the visuals are so well done and just simple that reminds me games like Pac-Man but take back everything I just said about classic graphics. Cause when you actually get to blast things with your raygun, it turns into something amazing! I won't spoil it, you just need to play this game!. The game definitely looks and sounds nice, to begin with, and it has some really interesting ideas in it, but that's about as far as it goes.

The game is an arena shooter built around a series of rather gimmicky mechanics, which more or less take over all the shmup elements.

The controls are very unintuitive and irritating. The dubious decision to use both the keyboard and mouse, as well as the extreme discomfort of reaching over to the number keys, really hurts the game, and it feels like it was designed exclusively for left-handed people. Often, getting the controls to do what I want is the hardest part. This alone will probably be a deal-breaker to most shmup fans.

I like the idea of having large open levels between the bosses, but they feel empty, tacked-on, and devoid of action, and most of the time one only needs to see a small part of them to progress anyway.

The bosses are interesting and are probably the best part of the game. On one hand, they are exciting and colourful and each one offers something new, but some tend to overuse annoying puzzle elements while others lack intricacy, and it's not uncommon for a boss to use the exact same attack for more than 15 seconds at a time.

There are some good things in it, but it mostly feels like just another janky reinvention of shmups for reinvention's sake.
