Super fun top-down Gung-Fu game with pleasing graphics, satisfying slow mo, groovy music, an entertaining try-die-repeat game loop and not much variety. As many say - it feels like a mix of Max Payne and Hotline Miami. There is a lot of shoot-dodging and death comes quickly and often, but level reset is just one button push away. The shooting is weighty and satisfying - the camera shakes with each trigger push, ample particle effects fill the screen in slow mo, enemies explode with gallons of blood and ragdoll in entertaining ways. Unlike Hotline Miami 2 I've never been killed or detected by enemies that are out of my viewing range, which removes a big irritation factor, so most of my deaths I can only attribute to my own clumsiness. I certainly feel like I'm getting better at the game with each new level or each new try. As such coming back to earlier levels is a joy, as I feel like a gung-fu Ipman, gracefully diving through windows while blasting triads in the face with a shotgun. I've made it past around 20 levels and I suspect there are at least as many more. The game is not easy, but so far I haven't encountered any level that I had to replay more than 10 times to get through. However getting through the Challenges for each level requires some skill and dedication. Unfortunately those challenges are all the same 3 for each level and in general there are only 4 weapons in the game. But passing challenges allows you to upgrade those weapons, which in turn give you more options during the gunfights (dual wielding upgrade on Uzi was my favorite so far). The story is what it is - a generic Hong Kong cop drama with quite some grammar mistakes in the dialog. Interestingly there is no voice over (which is usually for the best in an indie game), but there are simple CGI cutscenes. To me they look quite good and set up the proper atmosphere of gloomy Hong Kong full of doublecrossing cops and Triad-Den restaurants.. This game made me want to throw my computer out of the window.. HOLY Crap! What a ride. This is quite possibly one of the simplest games I own but good lord is it fun. I just couldn't stop playing for a half hour. lots of deaths, lots of respawns.. This is the first game that i impulsively bought on release day, and i do not regret it. Lots of reviews mention input lag which i did not experience, so i'll assume that they were talking about the movement speed, which is pretty slow. I didn't like it at first, but then i got good at using the dodge ability combined with the slow-mo and i felt no "input lag" or slow movement, and it was fun. The over the top particle effects never hindered my ability to see the enemies, which was very surprising, and it also looked really cool. The story is not directly presented to you via a wall of text, but instead you have to piece it together using scraps of information you gather through the cutscenes. In my opinion that is one of the best ways of storytelling. I loved the level design of the boss fights, which were fun and did not get repetetive, as some of the boss' "minions" got tougher and tougher. The game is really short, i beat it in 3 hours but it does have challenges for each level which are difficult and add replay value to the game: Beat the level under a time limit, don't use the slow-mo ability and don't waste a single bullet. The game can be improved a lot by adding a level editor feature, which would allow for endless content on the steam workshop, and since the game is in 3D, it would be nice to see a replay feature which could have a camera "inside" the level and not in a top down perspective.. So disappointing. I have been waiting for this game for so long and now I bought something totally bugged. Mouse buttons are not working and part of menu is outside of my screen. Without mouse I can't change screen resolution and even start the gameplay.
