THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Deadly Smorgasbord Affair - 1967
This is the 77th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.
UNCLE agent Robert Vaughn is sent off to Stockholm Sweden to take possession of a S.A.D. This stands for suspended animation device that a scientist, Peter Brocco has created by mistake. Brocco realizes the device could be used for evil purposes, so he wants UNCLE to keep it safe.
Of course THRUSH hears about the device and sends out a bunch to scoop the item up. Local THRUSH boss, Robert Emhardt figures that scoring the device will move him to the top of THRUSH. He has an agent, Pamela Curran, (Curran is the mandatory blonde type for this episode) planted in the lab with Brocco.
THRUSH makes their play and kidnaps the Professor, Brocco. They however fail to acquire the device. Vaughn is ordered to return to UNCLE headquarters with said item. However there is another attempt at the airport to snatch the thing. THRUSH again fails to get the item, but do end up taking Vaughn and Brocco's daughter, Lynn Loring, prisoner.
After a spot of torture, and threats to kill Loring, Vaughn gives up the location of the device. THRUSH boss, Emhardt, plans on using the device to attack the local UNCLE headquarters. This they do by using the devise to freeze all the UNCLE types in suspended animation. Then they plan on planting explosives and destroying the UNCLE outpost. An added danger to UNCLE is that UNCLE boss, Leo G Carroll, is in town visiting the office.
Needless to say Agent Vaughn and company come to the rescue and put the kibosh on Emhardt and his minions.
A better than expected episode from which David McCallum is absent. He is off chasing some THRUSH villains across the Argentine pampas.
Look quick and you will see actor/stunt driver Bill Hickman as a THRUSH gunman. Hickman was the driver of the Dodge Charger Steve McQueen chases in BULLITT. He was also behind the wheel in the great car chases featured in THE FRENCH CONNECTION and THE SEVEN-UPS.
Also with a small part is one of the 1940's best screen villains, Martin Kosleck. His icy demeanor and piercing stare had him in demand when a Nazi type was needed. 'The Deadly Smorgasbord Affair' was the second of two 'M.F.U.' episodes to be penned by Stanley Ralph Ross, who like Stanford Sherman, had worked on the 'Batman' series. Ironically, his episodes are among the less campy offerings of Season 3. Solo is in Stockholm ( there's no Illya in this episode ) to meet one 'Professor A.C. Nillson' ( Peter Brocco ) who has apparently invented a device that can cause instant suspended animation. He calls it 'S.A.D.' ( Suspended Animation Device ). Of course THRUSH wants it as well. They come very close to getting it in the teaser as Nillson's student daughter 'Inga' ( the stunning Lynn Loring ) accidentally activates the thing while dancing on a desk in a classroom. THRUSH men arrive, but one of them switches it off, and so Solo is able to retrieve the machine.
Several attempts later, they get what they want, and THRUSH villain 'Heinrich Beckman' ( Robert Emhardt ) uses S.A.D. to help him break into U.N.C.L.E.'s Norwegian headquarters. A couple of familiar faces in the cast - Emhardt had been 'Colonel Picks' in 'The Apple A Day Affair' while Pamela Curran - 'Inga Bergstrum - was 'Margo' in 'The Sort Of Do-It-Yourself Dreadful Affair'. Peter Brocco had been one of the three benign scientists - 'Dr.Wu' - to interfere with the world's weather in 'Our Man Flint' ( 1966 ). Loring returned the following season for 'The Test Tube Killer Affair'.
No outstandingly brilliant ideas here, but a decent enough episode. British viewers would not, of course, been aware of the in-joke concerning the professor's name - 'A.C. Nillson' is the American television ratings system.
