Next month, the Saint's best friend, Jack Easton, is about to marry Belinda Dean, a pampered brat who has a habit of being bad tempered and mean to others. For her own good, Belinda's aunt, Joan, decides that it's high time someone taught her immature niece a valuable lesson about life, so without any delay, she plots a harmless scheme with the aid of the Saint that will leave her deprived of resources. Inevitably, Belinda, desperate, with no passport and penniless, she will have no other choice but to leave Costa Brava in Spain and follow her best man, the Saint, to a 100-mile hiking trip to Tormes for an unforgettable adventure in the wild. Ultimately, with still three days remaining until Tormes, will the Saint with his treatment succeed in the taming of the shrew?
Simon Templar has accepted to be best man at his old friend Jack Easton's wedding. The bride, Belinda Deane, is a spoiled young woman. She is a shrew, always complaining and criticizing. Simon understands that this will destroy the coming marriage, and decides to expunge this personality trait before the wedding. He finds Belinda at a hotel in Costa Brava, Spain. In the night he sneaks into her hotel room and steals her passport, jewelry, money and traveler's' cheques. In the morning Belinda tells Simon that she has been robbed, and asks him to lend her some money, so she can go to Tormes, where she will meet her fiancé in 10 days. Simon lies that he has no money. He plans to walk the 100 miles along the coast to Tormes, and offers her to come along. Belinda refuses, but in the end she has no other option. During their weeklong walk to Tormes, Simon brusquely erases Belinda's scolding behavior step by step, and transforms her into an amiable person.
One of the less pleasing aspects of this as well as other UK series of the time like 'Danger Man' and even 'The Avengers,' was the strong vein of sexism that ran through them now and then. Misogynist behaviour was teemed to be mildly amusing as some 'silly young girls' got their comeuppance.

One of Simon's unseen best friends is getting married to a spoilt heiress, who 'needs' a lesson in manners. And the Saint takes it upon himself to do this. You'd think he would have better things to do but there you go...

The lesson takes the form of Simon conniving the wealthy girl to lose all her belongings and passport (stolen for the moment by Simon himself), so, that she has to accompany him on a long trek through the hills to the next town in Spain.

Along the way she learns how to do her share and enjoy sleeping beneath the stars and living the simple life. Thus reaching their destination a far better person than she started out.

So far, so good, not a bad thing to learn really. But Simon's casual cruelty and the over the knee spanking he administers, does leave a slightly bitter taste in the mouth with it's overt 'man is the superior animal' overtones.

Not one for the feminists to watch! THE GOLDEN JOURNEY is by far the worst episode of The Saint so far. The story is stuck with an extremely irritating character, a spoilt bride-to-be whom Templar decides to educate by making her less conceited. To do this he administers corporal punishment and takes away her belongings. It's a two hander for the most part but one which drags and drags, stuck with dated sexism and annoying attempts at repartee.
