Waited so long for this game. Lovely port, no problems/issues faced so far.. Amazing game! Up there with the good old Final Fantasy VII. Great story, gameplay and love the graphics style.. Ys Seven is an Ys title that delivers everything fans of the series have come to expect (fast, frenetic ARPG combat, anime-JRPG stories, and high energy orchestral and rock music) and adds its new twist to the formula for the first of the new trilogy of games: The Party System. I won't spend much time on the graphics or the music except to say that they're absolutely up to the standards of the Ys series, as is the general gameplay and boss fights. Ys 1 and 2 were the original games, using a basic 'bump combat' system and a very basic magic system. Origins, Felghana, and Napishtim expanded this with more versatile spells, extra weapon types, and skills and Boost modes. Seven (as well as Dana and Celceta) expand this again with the Party System, allowing 3 characters to be controlled at once. Each character also has an array of skills to learn, breaking up the dodge-attack-dodge loop even more. Combat is what you'd expect from Ys, very stick and move throughout the entire game. Characters have 3 different weapon types through the party: two characters each for Slash, Pierce, and Impact. Adol himself gets weapons for all three damage types, allowing you to mix and match your favorites without needing to worry about doubling up. Adol himself can't be removed from the party. Different enemies are weak to different types of damage, and characters can be swapped on the fly, both midcombat, and, when not in bossfights, even the entire party. This means there's never a break in the action, and enemy weaknesses become a reason to use all your party members and skills in rapidfire succession. The AI is competent, and has boosts to its dodging and defenses, so mostly it will be the character you control taking damage and aggro. Skills can be levelled up by using them more often, and the party also charges an "EXTRA" gauge, which can be spent for a flashy super move. Of note: On higher difficulties, enemy stats scale up, and your normal damage slightly scales down - but the bonus damage you get for attacking enemy weaknesses actually increases in higher difficulty levels, encouraging you to synergize your party even more. There is one mechanic everyone should be aware of that is never touched on in the game outside the physical manual, and that's the "Flash Guard". When holding down the Skill button, pressing the opposite trigger (on controller) activates "Flash Guard", essentially aparry that completely nullifies all damage, gives skill points to use skills with, and charges EXTRA. There is no cooldown on a successful Flash Guard, and it works on every single attack in the entire game. Final boss spamming a giant laser on you? Just keep mashing Flash Guard, and you'll take 0 damage and come out with an almost totally full SP gauge. Mastery of enemy attack timings and Flash Guard makes you damn near invincible, and if you intend to play Nightmare, it's a critical skill to master, as not only does it do all the above, but a successful Flash Guard gives you guaranteed critical hits for the next few seconds on evrything, including using EXTRA. Overall, a fantastic addition to the Ys series, and also one that can serve as a first entry into the series, if someone is alright missing some of the references to earlier games, specifically in regards to one party member and their motivations. Easily one of the best in the series, and a recommendation to any A-RPG lover.. pros + Great map and boss fight soundtrack (!!!) all YS games have great quality soundtracks + great and deep story with some twist.. Great game! I want to point out Ys origin is what made me buy this game, the other previous version before Origin felt unsatisfying. It's hard to point out the pleasent experience of the game, so I'll list what I dislike like about it first and then hopefully provide some decent points in why its good. Negatives: 1. I didn't like the randomize item drops from enemies meaning if I were to farm for something it would become very tedious. 2. I didn't enjoy the button holding SP generator mechanic, I spent 80% of the time using that to attack the enemy. I'm fine with the flash guard block beacause that makes sense but the combat experience for me was slightly ruined. 3. Force to spam the roll button to travel at a faster speed. 4.Skill leveling was another unnecessary grinding mechanic 5.Story wasn't that interesting to me but thats more of a personal thing. 6.Having three characters on the battlefield can be very distracting, making it harder to fight or just miss out on the awesome visual aspects. positives: 1.Nice fluid combat with many different skills to utilize for your characters, which makes it harder to lose interest. 2. I luv the idea of obtaining the Optional ultimate weapons for your characters 3. Instant travel, once unlock can make your journey or progression alot more convenient 4. Two optional bosses 5. A navigation point on your map to help locate your next objective 6.journal to identify which monster drops what item 7.Many different character to utilize with unique skill sets and special 8.Boss fight was fun but can sometimes be ridiculously hard or tedious if underleveled. 9. I enjoyed the layout of the levels As a side note for some of the negative portion of the game. I'm aware you can purchase, locate or aquire rewards to make some of the points less of a burden but it was far too late to notice it and it still required a little bit of grinding to it. Still this was a fun game and i recommend looking at a guide to help with enhancing your experience which I wish I've done sooner.. A great Ys game worth the price now if only number 5 would come to steam. Adol is back to kick more save the world and make all the ladies fall for him. Added to the mix for the very first time is a party based combat system like Kingdom Hearts and I like the change, it's still very much a solid and fun ARPG just now with more muscle and variation and i look forward to see how they will improve on this change in future titles. Story is still meh but then again who comes here for the story, switch off your brain and enjoy the music, puzzles and gameplay.. Strictly fun only in a turn-your-brain-off kind of way. The amount of decline in Seven compared to Oath in Felghana/Origin is astounding. What you get here is a mashfest which does nothing to change up how its played over the course of it's 20-hour length. Dungeon design has been completely simplified and platforming practically eliminated together with the removal of the ability to jump. Dungeons are nothing more than extremely simple mazes with enemies at every single turn of the road, with the occasional "puzzle" which simply comes down to equipping a key item and then unequipping it once you get past it instead of being a core ability with more depth to its usage. Oh no, it's a pool of lava. What do you do? Equip the ice amulet which let you walk over it safely. There's no intricacies involved to using it as there would be to a new ability in your usual metroidvania. Consider the opportunities the elemental amulets in Oath/Origin offered for both combat and exploration. Every enemy type comes down to mindlessly-charges-at-you or shoots-projectile-at-you with barely any variation other than debuffs inflicted and the size and amount of HP. Enemy types are rarely mixed together to create interesting encounters. Most boss fights play out almost exactly the same, and they're ridiculously tanky no matter how much you grind for gear or levels. Just walk up to them, spam your skills, and Flash Guard anything they throw at you. Unfortunately all bosses are ridiculously bulletspongy as most of them don't even have any second phases or intensifying attacks as the fight goes on, making them feel incredibly repetitive. The Flash Guard maneuver has had the most disastrous effect on the game. Basically, it lets you parry anything . Giant dragon claws crushing you, tornadoes, even if the whole arena fills with lava you can still Flash Guard it and walk away unscathed. It protects you from any damage, it makes your SP/EXTRA gauge fill faster, and it also gives you a temporary damage boost, so there's little reason why you wouldn't do it. But because it can parry literally everything, it also makes every attack the same. Giant fireballs? Sweeping claws? Enemies trying to crush you from above? Arena filling with lava? Just Flash Guard it. That's literally all there is to it. The only difficult part is memorizing the timings but after a few tries you should be golden. There's none of the frantic moving around and having to think about your positioning that was present in Oath/Origin. You can literally just stand still in front of the boss' face, mash attack, and Flash Guard when he's about to attack you. Every fight will be like this. The new party system could be good, it just isn't. For starters, the party AI is completely useless. Party members will try attacking enemies for barely any damage, only to get tons of damage in return. Do you like your party members taking damage even though you have no control over them? Get used to having to switch to a party member with only 1HP left if the one you just played as got knocked out. What's more, every party member doesn't play that radically different from the other. Party members have different basic attack combos and skills, but aside from that they play near-identical in terms of defense and movement. Consider the differences between playable characters in any kind of 2D beat 'em up, and then compare them to the differences between party members in Seven. The only reason you're often switching between them is because some party members deal damage of a certain type which some enemies are weak to while being resistent to others. Each party member has around 12 skills to extend their basic moveset. The thing is, you can only equip four. Instead of being part of your basic moveset, you'll just end up equipping the skills which deal the highest DPS, rather because of their uitility. Even moreso when you consider that skills take up a finite (but rechargeable) resource. Evenso, alot of skills per characters are near identical in purpose, with some skills being straight-up stronger versions of existing ones but higher SP costs. It's only made worse is that each party member has some minor variation of the same skill archetype which only makes each party member feel more identical. Almost every party member has at least four of these: an uppercut-launcher, a Stinger, a ranged attack, a circular AoE attack, a linear AoE attack, a flurry combo, etc. The grinding in Seven is somewhat worse since you have to grind for material drops now in order to be able to craft better gear, material drops often dropping based on chance. Each separate skill can be leveled each time you use it, but the leveling requirements can get as ridiculous as having to use a skill over 500 times just to advance a single level. There's items to let you speed up this grind, but it doesn't really take away the core of the issue. Also, the final boss expects that you have leveled all your party members evenly. You will have screwed yourself over royally if you didn't, even though there's nothing to suggest that was ever expected from you.. bad ys game ys game 4 babyz play real ys game leik oath. As I beaten this game via PS Vita, this JRPG has good things about it's OST's (Vacant Interference, epic track btw), combat, and grinding. Combat is great, especially boss fights since bosses actually fight like bosses. Grinding, the player's most hated time-consuming chore, isn't all that bad since you could beat it with just the minimum required gear, minimum skill levels, and crafting items that reduce the grind time along with listening to the epic ost's the player can enjoy.
