“Students building character while impacting the community in order to make a difference in extraordinary ways.”
In 2006, after watching Pay It Forward, Tristan Joseph Robinson, expressed a desire to create a service project around the principles set forth in the movie. Deeply moved by the message of the movie, Tristan desired to accomplish the goals of the movie: 1) Do something that really helps people. 2) Do something for people that they can’t do themselves. 3) Ask them to “pay it forward” by helping others in return.
Since Tristan had a profound interest in athletics and the lessons that are taught through sports, he suggested the name for his service project to be, “Play It Forward.” His idea was to engage underprivileged kids in healthy sports and academic pursuits to help them become better people. By doing so, they would be able to help other children.
The concept matured in to the following principles: Give without expectation of return. Serve fellow human beings who have unmet needs. Promote healthy activities and relationships. Live out scriptural doctrine. Teach through example. Help people to become helpers.
In 2010, Tristan along with his brothers, Bryce and Braden formed Play It Forward, LLC. A Dallas chapter was formed by his brothers, and the first event was held in 2010. Bryce orchestrated and managed a baseball camp for grade school children. A board of directors comprised of adults and children was formed in Dallas, and plans were made for future events.
The points of differentiation from other service organizations are many: 1) With the mentoring of adults, children are responsible for the design and implementation of their individual service programs. 2) The Play It Forward kids are responsible for coordinating fund raising activities. 3) Play It Forward “Life Lessons” are taught by the children to other children. 4) Biblical teaching is integrated into each activity. 5) Participants in Play It Forward activities are encouraged to seek out others who may be in need and to meet those needs.
Play It Forward students are committed to be warriors for God. They dedicate themselves to SOWing seeds for God’s purpose. They are devoted to living out the concepts outlined in the acronym, SOW.
Service-We commit to be godly
disciples to help our fellow man.
Obedience-We will be obedient to God and to follow Biblical
doctrine.
Worship-We promise to give God the glory for his wondrous
deeds performed through us.
Galatians 6:7 (New King James Version) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
Play It Forward, LLC is a Christian service organization that is designed to meet the unrealized needs of others. It is an organization that promotes self-esteem by offering opportunity not entitlement. It promotes an expectation of service without expectation of return.
