A vampire named Saya, who is part of covert government agency that hunts and destroys demons in a post-WWII Japan, is inserted in a military school to discover which one of her classmates is a demon in disguise.
In 1970, the four hundred year-old skilled samurai Saya is sent to the Kanto High School in an American military base in Tokyo by the Council, a secret society that has been hunting vampires for centuries. Saya has the appearance of a teenager but is the tormented half-breed creature with the soul of her human father and the powers and need of blood of her vampire mother. She is obsessed to face the powerful demon Onigen that killed her father. In the base, Saya saves Alice McKee, who is the daughter of General McKee and commander of the base, from the attack of several vampires. When General McKee is killed by a member of the Council, Alice runs to the hotel where Saya is lodged. They join forces and go to the countryside to chase Onigen.
This is a live action remake of the anime film of the same name produced in 2000. Unfortunately I haven't seen that version of the story which I believe is much shorter than this. The setting is Japan on 1970, the United States are fighting the Vietnam War and the story involves a US Air Force base, a general's daughter and a demon slayer.

The fight sequences in this film are very well done, plenty of bloodthe samurai swords go to work. There is some special effects work here that really does not look good; in fact it looks quite dated. Having said that, good work from the main actors, Gianna JunSaya, Allison MillerAlice McKee, Liam CunninghamMichael Harrison, JJ FeildLuke, KoyukiOnigen, Yasuaki KurataKato Takatora and Larry LambGeneral McKee.

The original film is about 48 minutes long, this version is about double that. Unfortunately in lengthening the story the writers seem to have lost a lot of the energy from the original. This is what I've read. So, over all, good fight scenes, not so good special effects and a slightly turgid script. Not really recommended, but the fight scenes are worth a look.

My score: 5.4/10
The new demon-fest, martial arts, anime adaptation has finally reached our cinemas! It's just a shame it SUCKED so much! This review servesa public warning! WOW! Well, what can I say about this? It was a genuinely amazing piece of art! I cannot recommend this film more highly. Full of gore, comedy, action, tension and suspense. The special effects blew me away – they looked so realistic yet had a touch of a comical, almost fantastical, element to then.

Anyways, that's enough talk about DAWN OF THE DEAD, let's move on to the film I said I'd review. BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE. Mmm. Wow! Well, what can I say about this? It was a genuinely pointless piece of sh*t! I cannot recommend this film at all! Full of pathetic gore, unintentional comedy, ridiculous action andmuch tension and suspensean ASDA commercial. The special effects blew me away for the simple fact that they were so terrible – they looked so unrealistic and was completely comical... but in a bad way! As you probably can tell, this film's major let down was the CGI. To be quite frank, I've played PS1 games that have better animation than this film. The blood that is sprayed and splashed about by the female protagonist's samurai swordshe decapitates, slices and chops her way through countless demons looks completely and utterly fake. Firstly, the 'blood' doesn't seem to be liquid, it's colour is wrong and, even more bizarrely, the blood seems to be floating! Almostthough this is taking place in outer space, with zero gravity. They look more like CGI Aero bubbles than anything else! And don't get me started on the main monster! Like most (good) films of this nature, the character has a big battle with a stronger foe and there's normally a building of suspense and then a final big reveal of this super powerful and dangerous creature. Well, not in this film. The character does indeed turn into a beast. But the whole audience (the few stupid enough to see it. Ahem) burst out laughing once the reveal took place. I have never seen anything quitestupid lookingthis – especially in a film from 2009! Now, I seriously don't mind bad, or not that believable, special effects, a few films that leap to mind are JASON AND THE Argonauts, ONE MILLION YEARS B.C, KING KONG (1933), etc, but they were made quite a while ago! And what's more, this was funded by Warner Brothers ! But that's not the whole of it; this film seems to use the terrible CGI every moment they can possibly use it! There's only one or two shots of real (non-CGI) gore and that's very minimal. There seems to be more animation in this than the original anime (!); even the shots that do not necessarily need any animation, have. For the finale, black dot things were randomly floating around the screen! Why ? I have no idea – maybe the film had made me crazy and I had started seeing things.

But, special effects are not the only part of a film (try telling that to TRANSFORMERS!), but the rest of the film is also equally bad. The dialogue is OMG LOL funny, with a few lines that would fit nice and snugly into one of Ed Wood's 'classics'. There is also an attempt at a deeper sub-plot, with flash backs of the girl's childhood etc. But surprise surprise (or maybe not) this also flops, and serves to be more of an unintentional parody to KILL BILL 2! Oh, and don't forget the STAR WARSesque ending that pops out of nowhere!

Overall, this film is dreadful. Easily the worst film I've seen of the year. But you know what, I really enjoyed it! It was fun and it made me laugh and laugh whilst taking the p*SS out of it. So for that, this deserves at least a 1 out of 5! See it if, like me, you can see it for cheap and really enjoy a terrible film. If not stick to the anime - which is Okay. I do really believe that if this film was made 30 + years ago, this would definitely be on my list of so bad they're brilliant films. The closest comparison I can give, is one of those so bad they're brilliant grind house films we love so much - so go along for the fun of it, not the intelligence!
If only the projectionist could be persuaded to play the first 10 minutes over and over for two hours, this might be a satisfying movie. Unfortunately, the middle and the end feature a weak lead character, choppy fight choreography, humorless dialogue and computer-generated effects that lookif they came from the "Ghostbusters II" era.
Blood: The Last Vampire beganBlood: The Last Vampire (2000) (2000), a Japanese anime movie scripted by Kenji Kamiyama and Katsuya Terada. It led to a manga, Blood: The Last Vampire (2001), written by Benkyo Tamaoki. It also gave rise to Blood+ (2005) (2005-2006), a 50-episode anime series. Not very closely. There are maybe two or three scenes that will look familiar. However, the movie is based on the original anime (meaning, only some things are the same). For example, there's no Haji. Again, one has to differentiate between three main version. First of all there's the well-known International Version released in Europe or in the States. Then there's a so-called Korean version that runs shorter than the International Version, due to a longer scene that was left out, and this version features also some alternate shots and other differences in comparison to the international version. There's also a special Hong Kong version that is different from the Korean version and of course the international version. This Hong Kong version features the "longer" version of the international cut but contains the scene with the Afro-vampires which is probably missing in all the American and European versions (which is definitely true for the German DVD) and the Korea DVD.
