Before he sold outto make a "love" story with crappy acting and writing, James Cameron had a respectable career as a ground breaking action director. Gone are those days, considering his failure to make a TV series and his "beat-into-the-ground" mentality for the Titanic has overtaken his once brilliant mind. Too bad, because this film truly lived up to its own hype. I mean, it even made Tom Arnold a highly touted star for a short while! Nonetheless, this film was actually much cooler than Terminator 2, and the pacing was much better than T2. Provided with a good backdrop of supporting players, Ahnold looked like a decent actor for one of the few times in his career. Oh how I long for the old days and the old James Cameron.
I finally rented True Lies and saw it the other night. In many ways, it's a wonderful movie, and in many ways, its a piece of sleaze. This is an expertly made piece of work that has flaws so big and so offensive that you can overlook them only if you have never thought beyond special effects.

The good: James ("Titanic", "Terminator", "Aliens") once more shows a virtuoso flair for the spectacular set piece. While the fabulous copter scene at the end may attract attention and really raise the hair on the back of your neck, the horse - motorcycle chase near the middle actually has more imagination in working with expectations. And the very beginning is handled with a sureness of touch that shows a master's hand at work. In addition, this is the best acting I have seen Arnold do. He combines a sense of self-deprecating humor with his usual expertise at physical stunts, and has a great sense of timing in both.

The bad: What the hell were they thinking in the Jamie Lee Curtis subplot? This is offensively written in every way.First of all the whole "secret identity" stuff... how unrealistic is that? Second of all, the pseudo-"affair" with the lame-oid Bill Paxton character Simon. Third, the way that she still doesn't have a clue even when they are captured and threatened with torture. And I haven't even come near the "prostitute-in-a-hotel" sequence, which is drawn out wayyyyy too long - and as if she couldn't recognize her husband in the dark! All in all, the whole "Arnold as family man" subplot is filmed as if it were about another species entirely. I could go on and on about this part of the movie; suffice it to say that it makes the entire middle of the movie unpalatable - an Oreo but with a Crisco filling.

Finally, the ugly: It may have been fashionable and effective at some point in time to depict Arabs, Syrians or other mid-Easterners as uniformly stupid, dirty, unshaven, and lunatic terrorists. But I suspect that that window opened and shut pretty fast, and today, this just looks like a bigoted depiction of straw-man "Ay-rabs" hollarin' their guts out and firin' them auto-matick weapons.

All in all, this is another example of how Cameron and the writers ...
