Great Britain is giving 50 million pounds worth of diamonds to a Middle East sheik in return for oil concessions. There are rumors of a plot by arch-criminal Gabriel to steal the diamonds, so the Secret Service Chief seeks the help of sexy spy Modesty Blaise, who brings along her sidekick Willie Garvin.
Modesty Blaise, a secret agent whose hair color, hair style, and mod clothing change at a snap of her fingers is being used by the British government as a decoy in an effort to thwart a diamond heist. She is being set up by the feds but is wise to the plot and calls in sidekick Willie Garvin and a few other friends to outsmart them. Meanwhile, at his island hideaway, Gabriel, the diamond thief has his own plans for Blaise and Garvin.
If those words make your heart beat faster, you'll probably thrill to this inexplicably legendary 1966 curio--a Bond spoof of sorts, with a female operative, directed by...Joseph Losey? As miscast as he is, he has nothing on Monica Vitti, giving Antonioniish line readings as Jane Bond, Dirk Bogarde as a typically smirking supervillain, or Terence Stamp--whose lazy, gigoloish performance suggests that his later Limeyness is the work of an evil twin.
I disagree quite strongly with those users who have given this film such a low billing. It is more than a bit unusual, of course, sort of like The Avengers done in Michaelangelo Antonioni's style. The music, costumes, and overall style are lighthearted and fun in a campy way, sometimes even dreamy. If you liked this film, you would like Antonioni's "Blowup".
