The Foundation developed a device that can help deaf people sense sound through touch. It is also being used by the military for a missile they call Moloch. At the same time some men who want to acquire the missile hires a man named David Crane to steal the missile. Crane decides not to steal the missile but instead take parts of it at different locations so that the thefts won't be detected. Carrie, deaf woman who also teaches deaf children has been having recurring dreams which all culminate in MacGyver's death. Mac tells her there's a possible explanation. But when they go to where the missile is being tested, Crane is there too, to steal the final piece he needs but Carrie recognizes him from her dream. That's when he makes a break for it. That's when they learn what he was doing and Mac surmises that he could have been taking parts from all over the country so while an inventory is conducted. Mac thinks that Carrie's dream might help them find Crane.
Mac and Pete present a Phoenix Foundation invention to a school for the deaf/mute: it converts sounds into waves to feel. The teacher Carrie Linden has strange, scary, symbolic dreams involving lightning, a Moor on a horse, a steel skeleton, a limousine, and Mac's death. A U.S. Army jeep is robbed of secret Moloch missile warheads by a fake sheriff and his deputies in South Carolina; they travel far to steal from an exhibition another part of the rocket. After a lightening bolts-marked van nearly runs them over, Mac convinces Pete to bring Carrie to dream researchers. They decide to take her along to a military test of the device, where she recognizes the fake sheriff, whose team escapes after a fire-fight, killing one of their own, and Mac realizes they are stealing Moloch missiles part by part. Mac helps Carrie identify the Braden Lake from her dream by its shape, and takes her there do 'decypher' the rest of the dream, successfully, but they're attacked by the missile thieves who kidnap her. It's high time for major Macgyverisms and brave, clever fighting.
I really enjoyed this episode --- a very imaginative plot, and with so much excitement and human-interest warmth all the way through! I especially loved the ethereal "dream images" of the "car on the water" with its comically creepy-sounding horn reminiscent of "The Car" (and later "Duel"), and of the enthusiastic uninhibited performance and wild whooping of the "Moorish warrior". I also thought that it was such an admirable idea for the episode to focus on helping physically challenged and underprivileged people, especially young students who still had their whole lives ahead of them. Mac's heartwarming friendship with Carrie and her pre-teen students shows first-hand how these infirm humans can be just as friendly and likable as "normal" folks, and it reminds me of another MacGyver episode "Second Chance", where Mac helps another pleasant-natured young girl who relies on a portable dialysis machine to stay alive.
This season 2 episode of MacGyver uses an intriguing interweaving of the military and the deaf community, both using the same high tech new device for far different purposes. MacGyver works with humor and respect among the deaf children who are to benefit from this device, and with precision and then alarm, among the military. Throughout is a dream sequence which slowly unravels into true life, helping MacGyver unravel the mystery of bad guys who appear on the base. I also enjoyed a "timing device" MacGyver rigged with near-nothing materials. Throughout, this episode focuses on interesting realms of science and technology just recently discovered and still in testing phases, which is fun. But already the bad guys have a use for it! Good cast.
