When the DEA shut down its dummy corporation operation codenamed SWORDFISH in 1986, they had generated $400 million which they let sit around; fifteen years of compound interest has swelled it to $9.5 billion. A covert counter-terrorist unit called Black Cell, headed by the duplicitious and suave Gabriel Shear, wants the money to help finance their raise-the-stakes vengeance war against international terrorism, but it's all locked away behind super-encryption. He brings in convicted hacker Stanley Jobson, who only wants to see his daughter Holly again but can't afford the legal fees, to slice into the government mainframes and get the money.
In this futuristic technology spy movie, John Travolta plays Gabriel Shear, a man who is desperately trying to access information that is locked inside a complicated computer system that contains mountains of government secrets - and money. He hires Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman), a desperate computer expert, to help him hack into the system.
I love the scene where Sam Shepard as the senator gets off the phone with John Travolta, and he's explaining to his aide about how you'd put down your rottweiler if he bit you - throughout this scene the aide has got an expression on his face that says clearly, "What the #&!@ is Sam Shepard doing in *this* movie???"

I liked Hugh Jackman, but I think he'd do better in his career if he remembered that there already is a Clint Eastwood.

Nothing irritates me more in movies than lines like "Have you ever heard of Harry Houdini?" I mean give us some credit! If people haven't heard of him, Travolta more or less goes on to describe exactly what Houdini did, so where's the harm in assuming a little bit of general knowledge in the audience? Unbelievable, inconsistent storyline, poor acting (except from Hugh Jackman) and an extremely shallow concept overall. Not one but two scenes of Jackman hacking to order, with 60-second countdowns. The provision of two completely incompatible alternate-ending twists (on the DVD release) just shows how bankrupt and immoral such film-making is. An insult to anyone with an IQ of over 50.

Berry's breasts are nice though. The action is constant, often pointless, definitely gratuitous, and breathlessly fun.
