It's an up-to-date setting of the 1962 Sci-fi thriller. With the world blinded and the Triffids set loose, it falls upon a band of scattered, sighted survivors to fight this carnivorous plant invasion. With a brave new world of maniacs, warring factions and renegades, the battle on the streets is not only directed at the purple-headed organisms but a battle to survive the sinister street-army headed by megalomaniac Torrence.

Looking at the cast list it should have been great and I am one who does not build up his expectations but I was expecting so much more. Pretty true to the book but it had no surprises. It could have been more exciting but the pace was slow for the most part and the triffids were not scary in the least. These actors are better than the script they were given and I am sure that some regret taking part. Eddie Izzard is an excellent baddie and the cinematography is very good but for me that is all I can say in it's favour. I prefer the 1981 TV series and even the film version has more going for it. Much as I like sci-fi and the book this is not one for my collection.
We watched the 1981 version of this first, we'd got both DVD's fairly close to each other, so thought it would make an interesting comparison.

The 81 one has slow moments and is 'of it's age' production value wise but is by far the best adaptation.

The 2009 one starts OK keeping roughly to the plot (We'll ignore the plane crash which is a to be honest a bit of a stretch credibility wise) but by part two it's quite happily wandering around desperately trying to find ways to destroy it's self and it manages it!.

A wasted opportunity.
