What a waste of time and gaming effort. Starting tools do not last through the first craft so you are stuck with no tools and no item and no way to make a new tool. try to build a fire with your starting items and your item (most likely the stick) will wear out before you get a fire so you have to make a new one which uses up your sharpened stone knife, Funny how a small wooden rod just destroys a piece of stone. s there you are you finally get a fire built but you had to use up your sharpened stone and alas there is no way on this planet to get another, or even find a piece of broken rock with a sharp edge. There is an elusive, mysterious and magical item in the game called a billet that is needed to make any sharpened stone or bone tool, problem is you cannot find one. it is probably crafted in a forge of some type so forget about crafting one folks. Would figure the designer would have at least made it possible to keep playing but after over an hour of looking for one I gave up. Tried several different combinations of charachter equipment and abilities and all ended up at the same result, no tools to do anything with and character left with no tools to scavange for food and water, what fun!!!!. Kenshi is a great example of how a game, even if stuck in development for many years, can be an amazing game that delivers on its premise AND delivers on the "fun" factor of a game.
Vantage: Primitive Survival, on the other hand... is not. It simply was not fun for me to play it despite enjoying the premise that it is built on, it felt tedious and the interaction controls with items as well as the grind required made me think of Wurm Unlimited\/Online, which sadly in this case is not a compliment. The way the gameplay has been designed and engineered just does not create fun for me, I would have far more fun booting up Stranded 2 than playing this game.
So no... I do not recommend it, and I don't care that it's Early Access either. You can't bug fix a bad game flow design, but I genuinely wish you the best of luck and give my best hopes that you make it through Early Access and release an amazing product, Crystal Dragon.
EDIT: I would like to emphasize quickly that, my comparison of this game to Kenshi is not meant to be 1:1... I am only contrasting the fact that both have been in development for a long time, and I am not measuring mechanics and genre between the two because that would be silly, both have different goals. It is only to emphasize the point of, "One delivers on a fun game flow and gameplay design, and one does not".. Yes the game is a grind, as many RPG's are. However the complexity of the grinding and using the various skills and improving them afterward is an ongoing reward for the work. Where I think this game differs from most RPG's even at this early stage is in the depth of the skill/craft progression, an attribute the developer shows every sign of continuing. It takes many hours of working on wood, stone, bone, hide, brushworking skills to rightfully feel I've earnt the crafts that are available already and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where he takes the game further. Hunting and fishing skills improve with use, "Yahoo, I can one shot a wolf with a sling now", and it feels satisfying to know that I can now make a fire in one try nearly every time, its not so easy at first. Add to that a very large world to explore.
In short this is very good, relaxed and varied "grind" with appropriate rewards thats already good for an enjoyable few days play. The developer listens, is very dedicated and I am very sure this game will only get better.. Early Access Review.
This game reminds me of Xsyon. The Grind is REAL. You Will Grind Constantly to level crafts very slowly.
I like that kind of game.
If you don't like spending hundreds of hours in a game to acomplish things through major grinds then stay away.
I DO like that kind of boring sht so I reccommend this game.. debated on picking this up for about a month.. just ran outta games that had a good crafting aspect to them. so i thought i would give this one a shot. Glad i did. let me warn you if you don't like to grind for something meaning putting work in to get a long term goal then this game is not for you.. First 4 hours of my game play was making stone sharping tools over and over as i would brake them when trying to cut off wood on a tree, after 4 hours i got to where i could accutally compleat one small branch without brakeing the sharpin tool that i just made out of banging rocks together. also all wile trying to keep water and food in my player. controls are a bit tricky, if you have played LiF then it's the same tab click tab move.. but if you have not then it will take you around about 30min to learn how to control the UI. this isn't a walk in the park game.. makes LIF on hard look like cake when it comes to crafting and grinding.. if you want a challange come see us.. there is only one server up and running. i am there pretty much everyday sometime in the day... Rats are Getting Squished!:
Development of the traps is coming along great! I have almost finished the the testing of the trap mechanics, only a few more small implementations to work through.
I plan to get the update out next week, barring any large issues. So you can start trapping critters yourselves!
Again this may seem like a long time and a lot of work for only a few traps as content. But as I mentioned before, for this update I have implemented some complex item and inventory mechanics which will make interacting with items for all future content much more immersive!
The traps for the next update are the first test and implementation of these mechanics.
I will of course talk much more about this after the content is released.
Stay Tuned!. Vantage Early Access Update 1.0.10 is live!:
This update optimizes many UI elements and object interaction bugs, as well as other "cool" stuff :)
As the bug list shortens, I start to have time to ponder and research content for the game. Yes, I know, *finally* ;)
I know bug fixing is boring and you hope to be building your own prehistoric metropolis with my next update announcement. And I am excited to start working on content as well. But taking the time to fix bugs, and optimize elements of the game to make it more fun to play is also important, and improves the game play experience as well for many people.
Stay tuned!!!. Update on Traps and Critters!:
Hello, I thought I would just let you know that the next update is coming along very well! I hope to have the content ready in a week or two.
Even though this seems like I am only adding a few traps and animals into the game, I want to also say that along with this content I am implementing some more in-depth game play mechanics relating to crafting and inventory/items. This next push of content will also be using these new mechanics.
And of course, that main reason for all of this work is to make future content even more exciting as well!
Stay Tuned!. Final Testing for "Hearth and Home" Next Week!:
I have finally done all of the work to implement all of the game play mechanics for all the new content for the "Hearth and Home" expansion. The amount of work I needed to do was quite a bit more then I was expecting so adding the content to the game took a little longer than expected. I had to add more items and game mechanics then I expected to, so sorry for that!
But I will begin doing the final tests next week and hopefully release the content soon after that! For now my initial tests seem to be great! No major issues at all.
I will of course keep you updated! But for now, my brain needs to sleep... :). Up and Running for the New Year!:
It took a little while longer, but I finally have my new computer set up and ready to go! I am looking forward to all the new development I will be doing, and hopefully I am now capable of doing some tutorial videos, and live Twitch streams in the near future, now that I have a computer that can do it.
The artists are working on the new art assets right now. And I will be working on a new large game-play mechanic that will work with the new content!
After this new content update is completed, the longer term plan of development is go to back to content creation. As in adding more professions, as well as a lot of items , skills and crafts for those professions.
Stay tuned!. Small Update on New Content!:
The research is done, and information was sent off to the artists to make the next set of content. What is it? Well I'll let you know when I have some cool stuff to show you :). Vantage Update Early Access 1.0.2 is Live!:
This update includes a little of everything. Female sounds have been added, inventory management overhaul, brains attached to skulls ;) and much more! You can read the patch notes on the forum.. Pre EA 0.5.3 is live!:
Vantage Pre-Alpha 0.5.3 is live! This version is the first result of the final game play testing. It is fortunately just a simple list of bug fixes, which is fantastic news for preparing the for actual Early Access release!
In a few days I will start advertising the game for more testers, and hand out the game to Twitch streamers and YouTubers who have asked to showcase the game. I would like to get a few more testers to test the game stability before announcing a release date, but it is getting close!. Release Date Planned for Early 2018!:
So, for many good reasons I have decided to schedule the release the game for early next year. This makes much more sense for me and the development schedule.
However, I do plan to still finish the game development by the end of this year so it can be played and tested by the play testers.
This also gives me time to advertise the game and spread the word before release.
So the game will hopefully be ready for Early Access by the end of year, and I hope to release it January or February. Stay tuned!. Vantage Early Access Update 1.0.5 is Live!:
This updates just adds a few small tweaks to the game, and of course more framework for content additions in the near future!
- Added a tutorial explaining fires, and maintaining them.
- Added server options for server hosts to restrict the game modes to "realism" character only, and disable tutorial characters as well.
Also, I updated and added many "tags" describing the game on the steam store, and now the traffic of people visiting the site has gone up tremendously! I guess we will see what will happen with that :)
